Trey Songz filed a lawsuit on Thursday related to his 2021 arrest at an NFL game in Kansas City.

The Grammy-nominated R&B singer, whose real name is Tremaine Neverson, attended the AFC Championship Game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills on January 24, 2021. Per his lawsuit, which was filed in the Circuit Court of Jackson County, Missouri, he was “heckled by attendees seated in his proximity because of his notoriety.” (According to a 2021 Associated Press report, the altercation occurred because Songz was not following coronavirus safety protocols.)

The heckling and harassment from the “unruly, aggressive, and intoxicated” fans drew the attention of stadium security and the Kansas City Police. But rather than confront the hecklers, they arrested Songz instead, he claims in court documents viewed by Showbiz Cheat Sheet. He was charged with trespassing, resisting arrest, and assaulting a police officer, but all those charges were later dismissed, he says in his filing.

Now, Songz is taking the Kansas City Police Department, along with Whelan Event Services and the Government Employees Health Association (GEHA), to court. He says they failed to protect him from the hecklers and used excessive force when wrongfully arresting him, leading to medical expenses and loss of work, reputation, and income. Songz is requesting a jury trial in the case and a judgment “in an amount that is fair and reasonable.”
