Where Will ‘Untamed’ Go Next? Netflix Renews Hit Thriller With a Brand-New National Park
Untamed was a runaway summer hit with viewers calling it visually stunning, atmospheric, and solidly performed. Though it wrapped its main story in Season 1, Netflix has decided to continue the saga. Season 2 is official, with Kyle Turner heading into fresh terrain with new mysteries. Filming is expected in the months ahead for a potential late-2026 release.
Netflix renews ‘Untamed’ for Season 2
Untamed follows Turner, played by Eric Bana, an agent with the National Park Service’s Investigative Services, as he unravels a chilling murder in Yosemite National Park. The six-episode mystery thriller premiered on Netflix on July 17, 2025. It was an instant hit, garnering 24.6 million views in its first week.
Untamed stayed atop Netflix’s TV charts for two consecutive weeks, quickly becoming one of the streamer’s biggest summer draws in 2025. It holds an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus praising Bana’s presence and Yosemite’s stunning backdrop.
Originally billed as a limited series, Netflix has officially renewed Untamed for Season 2. Bana confirmed his return as Turner, sharing enthusiasm about bringing more of his journey to life. Lily Santiago, who plays rookie ranger Naya Vasquez, is also on board. She expressed eagerness to solve more cases in exciting new terrain. She even jokingly told TV Insider, “Bring me to a mountain in Hawai’i. I’m hoping that it’s new murder, new location, wilderness challenges, and new things to learn.”
Where will ‘Untamed’ Season 2 take place?
The creators, Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith, revealed that Untamed Season 2 will explore a new mystery in a different national park, with each park envisioned as a character in its own right. Unlike Season 1, where Kyle led confidently in Yosemite, Season 2 will place him in unfamiliar terrain — both physically and emotionally. He’ll be “on his back foot,” figuring things out along with the audience.
Netflix released more Untamed details via Tudum, explaining that real-life agents “routinely” travel from park to park. “This won’t be the first park he’s been in since Yosemite,” Smith says. “He’s been to a lot of parks. He’s been busy, taking on a lot of cases. This will be the latest and it’ll be more impactful for him.”
The Season 2 setting will have its own unique cultural and geographical identity. The Untamed creators told Netflix, “We can make the case organic to a different kind of park, a different kind of landscape, [and] not have someone just fall off another mountain.” With fans speculating on the filming location, here are our educated guesses based on what’s been said:
Volcanic landscapes (Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park)
This is a likely spot for Season 2 of Untamed. Given Santiago’s “mountain in Hawaii” comment, Volcanoes National Park offers rich visuals and unfamiliar terrain for the rangers.
Desert majesty (Joshua Tree or Death Valley National Park)
A desert location like Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Arches National Park, or even Canyonlands National Park would contrast sharply with Yosemite’s greenery. The open expanse could emotionally mirror Turner’s isolation and provide many physical challenges for the Untamed rangers.
Wetlands or swamplands (Everglades National Park)
A unique, tropical environment, Florida’s Everglades National Park would put Kyle Turner in another completely new environment. A popular destination for tourists, the region is still fraught with its own dangers and unfamiliar wildlife, which could inspire exciting storylines.
Northern wilderness (Glacier, North Cascades National Park)
Dense forests, remoteness, and snow-laden landscapes could visually and thematically shift the tone of Untamed while maintaining a coniferous setting.
While Netflix hasn’t announced an official release date, early estimates suggest a likely late 2026 or possibly 2027 premiere, assuming production begins in 2026.
