It’s been 30 years since the Spice Girls first burst onto the music scene with their hit single, “Wannabe.”

The track was released in the U.K. in July 1996, followed by its release in the U.S. in September of that same year. Their debut album, Spice, dropped a few months later and made Mel C (Sporty Spice), Mel B (Scary Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) household names.

In 1998, Geri Halliwell left the group. The remaining four members continued touring for two more years before disbanding to focus on solo careers. Following an indefinite hiatus announced in 2000, the ladies officially split in February 2001.

Since their initial breakup, the women have reunited for several special projects, including the 2007–2008 Return Tour, their performance at the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony, and a 2019 Spiceworld U.K. tour, which Victoria did not participate in due to her fashion commitments. However, it’s doubtful that fans hoping for a 30-year reunion tour will get it.

When speaking about the milestone anniversary in March, Mel C. told an Australian radio program, “It’s a big one. And no, there is no reunion. We are communicating all the time. We want to do something. Who knows when? But I still feel very optimistic, and I keep my fingers crossed that you will see the Spice Girls together at some point in the future.”

Some fans believe that Victoria is the one holding back from the entire group getting together again.

The band’s former manager, Chris Herbert, spoke to Betway about whether he thought Victoria is the reason for that and why he can’t see the iconic group reuniting any time soon.

“Personally, I’d only want to see it if all five of them were on stage together. I wouldn’t want to see four of them or three of them,” Herbert said. “Their legacy deserves all five members. Looking at what Victoria has achieved, though, she’s done something remarkable. She’s managed to establish herself in the fashion industry, which is notoriously difficult. People don’t usually take pop stars seriously when they move into luxury fashion, but she’s proved everyone wrong.

“She’s built a hugely respected business. I honestly don’t know why she’d want to put that at risk for a reunion. As much as I’d love to see all five of them together again, I struggle to see it happening. I’d be delighted to be proved wrong, but I just can’t see it. She’s built an incredible career doing something she’s genuinely passionate about.”

Herbert added, “As for whether Victoria is stopping a reunion, I honestly don’t know … The difficulty is that they’re all incredibly busy. They’re not sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring. Just organizing a meeting between five people with careers and families is a challenge, never mind planning a world tour. People talk about the 30th anniversary as though these things happen overnight, but they don’t. A reunion like that requires years of planning.”
