Wanya Morris’ Version of His Relationship With Brandy Differs From Hers
Brandy Norwood and Wanya Morris’ relationship began during the height of ’90s R&B. As a teenage fan of Boyz II Men, Brandy was first introduced to Morris through industry connections. And their bond quickly evolved from friendship into a romantic relationship that lasted roughly two years. In more recent reflections, particularly in her 2026 memoir, Brandy has revisited the relationship through a more critical lens, describing it as emotionally imbalanced. Here’s what Brandy wrote compared to what Morris said about the relationship in the past.
Brandy Norwood wrote about her relationship with Wanya Morris in her 2026 memoir
Brandy Norwood pulled back the curtain on her life in her 2026 memoir, Phases. She reflects on her rise to fame as a teenage star and the pressures of maintaining a polished public image. Brandy also talked of the personal struggles that unfolded behind the scenes. Among the most talked-about revelations are her reexamination of past relationships, including her early romance with Boyz II Men’s Wanya Morris. The memoir also touches on her bond with Whitney Houston and the guidance she received at pivotal moments.
Brandy and Morris reportedly met through industry circles and began to admire each other. As Brandy attained fame, she and Morris grew close. Morris was already famous as Brandy began to gain momentum in the entertainment industry.
In the past, Morris suggested that he never dated Brandy when she was underage. However, Brandy wrote that the relationship began when she was 16, and he was 22, according to USA Today. Brandy alleged that Morris would call her regularly when she was just 15 to offer advice.
“‘My girlfriend is sixteen.’ I don’t remember when he first said it. But those four words started rolling off Wanya’s tongue whenever we were alone,” Brandy wrote in her memoir. “I couldn’t tell if this refrain was meant to soothe his own conscience or temper the questions shimmering in my gaze.”
Brandy added that she and Morris began “sneaking around.” And she “knew full well that what was happening between Wanya and me was wrong. And yet, my attitude was, ‘This is special. This is real. People just can’t understand.'”
Brandy noted that she “genuinely believed” she and Morris had “true love,” and she lost her virginity with him. Ultimately, she wrote that she and Morris split after he confessed to sleeping with other women.
“For years, I struggled with how I was treated in this relationship,” she wrote. “He saw a fifteen-year-old girl with rising fame and admiration for his talent, and I believe he deliberately took advantage. This was a twenty-two-year-old man who I believe knew exactly what he was doing when he pursued an underage girl.
The Boyz II Men singer discussed the past relationship in an Instagram Live
In 2021, Wanya Morris took to Instagram Live to discuss his past relationship with Brandy Norwood.
“Brandy and I were friends in the beginning,” he said at the time, according to MadameNoire. “Her mother reached out to me as well as my manager reached out to Brandy, because Brandy was a big fan of mine. I was like, ‘Wow, that’s amazing,’ because this young lady was pretty cool.”
Morris noted that he was “young at the time” and not yet in his 30s. “Don’t get it twisted,” he continued, adding that Brandy became his “little protege.” He then introduced her to others in the industry, and he and his mom wrote the theme song to “the Brandy show.”
“Once she turned of age, we had been hanging around each other so much that there came to be some sort of connection. An intimate connection,” he continued. “We actually fell in love,” he said.
Morris noted that he and Brandy were both young when they fell for each other. “Now, when you’re young, you make decisions based on your youth,” he continued. “You don’t make decisions, moral decisions that put you in a whole position where you know that this is what’s going to be for the rest of your life. You’re learning through everything. And Brandy and I learned through a lot….”
Morris noted that anyone could ask Brandy, “and she will tell you the same story.”
“Whoever is there saying all kinds of crazy things like they know, regardless of anything, my age, her mother and father was a part of our relationship,” he said. “They allowed me to guide Brandy and to help her through her career. They understood that we had grown close and that’s what it was.”
