The Plath family is returning to TV, and their divisions are deeper than ever.

On Monday, TLC dropped a trailer for Welcome to Plathville Season 8. The teaser reveals that Lydia Plath and her new husband Zac Wyse are on the verge of a permanent estrangement from her dysfunctional family following the drama at their February 2025 wedding.

The latest tension within the Plath family will look awfully familiar to longtime fans of the show, given that it mirrors in some ways the issues Lydia’s older brother Ethan Plath and his ex-wife Olivia Plath had with his family.

In season 7 of Plathville, Lydia introduced her family to her boyfriend, Zac. But rather than being happy for her, her mother and her brothers, Ethan and Isaac, were skeptical of her whirlwind romance. Ethan and Isaac also bullied Zac for not being “manly” enough for them, with Ethan bluntly questioning his future brother-in-law’s sexuality. The couple’s wedding was later marred by a violent brawl between Isaac and his brother Micah Plath.

In the teaser, Lydia confesses that she was deeply upset by her family’s behavior.

“I’ve been angry,” she says. “I’ve been really upset at my family for what they did.”

But if Lydia thinks her family is going to express remorse for her actions, she might be disappointed.

“I think they’re wanting apologies,” Kim tells a producer before a sitdown with Lydia and Zac. She adds that she doesn’t know if she’ll apologize to her daughter.

Lydia and Zac are trying to take things in stride.

“We’re going to control what we can control, but their reactions, we can’t control,” Zac says.

But Lydia makes it clear she has boundaries that must be respected.

“If I find out that they are still gossiping about Zac and I, I will not tolerate it,” an emotional Lydia tells her family.

‘Welcome to Plathville’ couple tries to set boundaries with family

Lydia is now in a similar place to the one that Ethan found himself in after he said “I do” to Olivia. Soon after their wedding, Olivia found herself cast in the role of the Plath family scapegoat. The couple’s attempts to build a life for themselves separate from his family were met with hostility, while Olivia’s efforts to establish boundaries, especially with her mother-in-law, led to her being treated as the family villain. The tension contributed to the eventual end of Ethan and Olivia’s marriage.

Will Zac and Lydia face the same fate as Ethan and Olivia? Only time will tell. But if they want their marriage to survive, they will likely need to stand firm against his family’s attempts at manipulation.

Welcome to Plathville Season 8 premieres March 31 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on TLC.
