What Would It Take for the DA to Bring Charges Against Diddy for Tupac’s Murder?
In late August, a Las Vegas jury delivered a guilty verdict in Duane “Keffe D” Davis’ murder trial. The official conviction of first-degree murder in the slaying of Tupac Shakur should have put to rest most questions about the decades-old cold case. The trial only raised more questions. Now that Davis is in jail, fans of the slain rapper are eyeing another person who came up repeatedly during the trial. Sean “Diddy” Combs was mentioned multiple times as the man behind the hit, but no charges have been filed. Could they be coming?
How is Sean “Diddy” Combs allegedly connected to the death of Tupac Shakur?
Sean “Diddy” Combs has never been charged in Tupac Shakur’s death. He did not appear as a witness at Keffe D’s trial either. Still, his name came up a lot. Over two weeks of testimony, the case became entangled with allegations about the Bad Boy founder’s supposed role, along with claims of police corruption and links to the 1997 killing of the Notorious B.I.G.
One of the most notable moments came when prosecutors played audio of an interview in which Davis said he had expected payment from Diddy after Tupac’s death. Davis also claimed a $1 million hit had been placed on Shakur but said he never saw the money, speculating that an associate might have been paid instead. Jurors also heard testimony about the bitter rivalry between the Mob Piru and Southside Compton Crips gangs, and how those gangs became associated with Suge Knight’s Death Row Records and Combs’ Bad Boy Records.
This is not the first time that theories about Diddy’s involvement in Tupac’s death have been floated. Over the years, there have been whispers about whether he ordered the rapper’s killing. Still, those claims remained unconfirmed. Now, after a years-long legal battle of his own, fans seem to think there might be some credibility behind the conspiracy theory. The real question, however, is whether the district attorney would ever consider pursuing charges.
Would the district attorney pursue charges?
Tupac Shakur was killed in Las Vegas. All criminal charges associated with the death will be dealt with by the Clark County District Attorney’s office. In the wake of Keffe D’s conviction, the District Attorney, Steve Wolfson, did speak out. Wolfson said prosecutors are not entirely opposed to pursuing charges against Diddy if there was significant evidence linking him to Tupac’s death. He stressed that prosecutors do not currently have sufficient proof to charge anyone else, and that they would act only if new evidence emerges.
While there is no statute of limitations on murder charges, finding credible evidence at this point feels like an uphill battle. The allegations against Diddy are directly tied to Keffe D, whose own credibility was a central issue during his trial. His own attorney basically suggested he was a liar who used dramatization for street cred and money. While the defense wasn’t enough to get Keffe D acquitted, the doubt might be enough to keep Diddy from facing charges for his alleged connection to the shooting.
Diddy has always denied involvement
While the District Attorney doesn’t have enough evidence to move forward, Diddy isn’t dropping the issue. Over the years, he has denied any and all involvement in Tupac’s death, and he is doing the same now. A source close to him previously told TMZ that he had absolutely nothing to do with Shakur’s murder and neither pulled the trigger nor set it up.
Diddy is currently serving a four-year federal prison sentence after being convicted on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, a case unrelated to Shakur’s death.
