Will Mellor has spent decades on British TV. He’s pretty well known, but he’s not nearly as famous as the man who broke up a fight between Mellor and another partygoer years ago. The Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps star recently recalled the time Prince William steered him away from a nightclub scuffle on the same night they met.

Will Mellor claims Prince William once broke up a bar fight

During an appearance on Happy Place, the podcast hosted by Fearne Cotton, Mellor opened up about the night Prince William came to his rescue. He explained that he had reluctantly agreed to go out to a London nightclub with friends one evening.

Mellor said he was on crutches and wasn’t really in the mood to party, but he was having a good enough time when he crossed paths with Prince William in the bathroom. He said they exchanged pleasantries, and he was shocked that the prince knew who he was. You’d think that’s where the story would end, but William surprised the actor again later that night.

Mellor revealed that a group of partygoers shoulder-barged him off his crutches while he was dancing. When he saw one of them laughing at him, he lost his cool and dove at the man, and the two ended up scuffling on the floor. Then he felt someone pick him up by the shoulders. It was Prince William, who looked him in the eye and told him, “Leave it Will, he’s not worth it.”

William’s security team then stepped in and removed both men. As Mellor was escorted out of the club, he shouted for the prince to back him up: “Tell them William, it’s not my fault!” Mellor said William calmly told him, “It’s all right, don’t worry about it.”

He has told the story before

The night may have ended early, but at least Mellor came away with a story to tell. He said a friend called him after he got home and told him he would never forget the sight of Prince William with his hands on Mellor’s shoulders, talking to him like they were old pals.

It seems to be one of Mellor’s favorite stories, since he’s told it more than once. In 2016, he recalled the incident on ITV’s This Morning. He told hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby that he had been on crutches from a knee injury and had sneaked into a “posh party” at an exclusive London bar. He said he’d had a few drinks before another guest barged him off his crutches.

Mellor hasn’t said exactly when the incident happened, though it was clearly before his 2016 This Morning appearance. Prince William’s clubbing days appear to be far behind him. He was a regular on the London nightlife scene in the years before his 2011 wedding to Kate Middleton, so the run-in may date back to that era. Kensington Palace has not commented on Mellor’s account.
