Over the years, a few TV shows have earned sincere fan devotion—shows that might have gone under the radar when they were first released but have since become cult classics. One of these shows is Being Erica, a Canadian comedy-drama series that went off the air over a decade ago.

In 2020, fans of the show were surprised to hear that it had been picked up for a reboot. And in the months since, fans have had a lot to say about the reboot online, even revealing their thoughts on the casting of Allison Williams in the lead role of Erica.

When did the original ‘Being Erica’ run on television?

Being Erica debuted on CBC in 2009. The series told the story of Erica Strange, a young woman who decides to start seeking therapy in order to deal with past traumas and regrets. Much to Erica’s surprise, she discovers that her therapist, Dr. Tom, has the ability to send her back in time to deal with her issues directly.

The combination of time travel, comedy, and drama all served to endear the series to audiences, and it quickly became a favorite amongst viewers of all ages. At one point, according to The New York Times, the series was BBC Worldwide’s most-distributed scripted drama.

Being Erica went off the air in December 2011, after just 49 episodes. Still, the series was never officially canceled, which has led many fans to believe that it would eventually come back—and in December 2020, almost 10 years after the series halted production, some good news surfaced.

A reboot of ‘Being Erica’ was announced in 2020

In December 2020, reports started swirling that Williams, the star of HBO’s Girls, was attached to executive-produce and star in a remake of Being Erica. According to TV Line, the series was planned as a “loose adaptation” of the original show and would focus on two different women who are sent back in time only to discover that their lives are entwined in a mysterious way.

TV Line reports Williams as telling Deadline “I was a huge fan of the original series and I jumped at the opportunity to get involved to help give it a new life. I am so fortunate to be working with such an incredible group, and I cannot wait to share our version with the world.”

What do fans say about the ‘Being Erica’ reboot?

Fans jumped for joy at the exciting news of a Being Erica reboot, and quickly took to Reddit to discuss the project. “It’s definitely not going be the same. Not bad, just not the same,” one fan wrote. “I think Canada’s programming is a bit more lax than here in the states, which gives the show some breathing room and really lets it shine.”

Another fan noted “This is such great news. The show is smart and deep and light and heartfelt all at the same time. I wouldn’t mind a little more Normal People sexy scenes in the new series please…”

Some fans were critical of the reboot, with a number of critics expressing disappointment that the original series star, Erin Karpluk, wouldn’t be involved in the show. “It was easy to love Erin which is why the show worked. She also was able to look convincing as a young teen in her jumps. Those will be hard heels to fill,” one fan said. Although the reboot was big news in 2020, there have been no updates regarding the project in the past year – so it’s hard to say when fans might get to enjoy the updated adventures of Erica Strange.
