BLACKPINK is one of the most famous K-pop groups in the world. They are so famous that a pair of pop superstars co-wrote a song for them. Here’s a look at how the public reacted to that song.

A superstar felt ‘joy’ while working with BLACKPINK

In the United States, BLACKPINK is probably most known for their song “Ice Cream.” Listening to the track, it’s no wonder why it appealed to American audiences. The song has elements of hip-hop and pop instrumentation that make it sound right at home on American radio. Perhaps “Ice Cream” sounds the way it does because two American pop icons co-wrote it.

According to AllMusic, Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande co-wrote the track alongside Bekuh BOOM, Tommy Brown, Steven Franks, and Victoria Monét. Gomez is a featured artist on the track. According to Billboard, she had plenty to say about BLACKPINK.

“Ice Cream”

“I’m so excited,” Gomez said. “The girls are so cool, and I love their music. I just think that they know… They have this thing about them… I had such a good time with them over FaceTime.” Variety reports Gomez had plenty to say about the song itself as well.

“It’s definitely a joyful thing,” she opined. “Being a part of it brought me joy. It’s hopefully what everybody else will get from it too. I just want people to feel good. I have a 7-year-old sister, and just to see her dancing to it — she hasn’t been able to go to school, and just seeing how much fun it can be, it was such a highlight.”

Grande commented she wrote the track with some “awesome friends.” According to Elite Daily, Grande celebrated the release of the “Ice Cream” video by sending Gomez a bouquet of flowers arranged resemble an ice cream cone. Grande may not sing on “Ice Cream,” but the song blends genres, like many of Grande’s greatest hits.

What Jennie of BLACKPINK thought of Selena Gomez

Billboard quotes Jennie of BLACKPINK saying positive things about Gomez. “We’ve been aware of her for a very long time and luckily when this song came out on song cam we had the idea to have Selena on it, because we obviously knew she would fit into it right away,” she said. “And yeah, it happened very naturally.”

How the public and Ariana Grande reacted to ‘Ice Cream’

So how did audiences react to the song? “Ice Cream” reached No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track performed substantially better than the two BLACKPINK singles which are tied as the group’s second highest-charting singles: “Sour Candy” — a collaboration with Lady Gaga — and “How You Like That,” both of which reached No. 33. It’s certainly interesting and notable that BLACKPINK’s duet with Gomez outperformed their collaboration with Gaga. The public found the combination of BLACKPINK, Grande, and Gomez as sweet as ice cream.
