This year’s Call the Midwife Chrismas special is set in 1966. With the maternity home filled with expectant mothers and challenging cases, the Nonnatus House nuns and midwives will be faced with their biggest day ever. Fortunately, Mother Mildred (Miriam Margolyes) — who was absent for Call the Midwife Season 10 — will be on hand to support the team. (Margolyes didn’t appear in any season 10 episodes because travel restrictions meant she wasn’t able to return to the U.K. for filming, according to Express.)

Dr. Turner’s (Stephen McGann) son Tim (Max MacMillian), who is studying to be a doctor, will also get a sense of what the job really entails when he shadows his dad at work..

“This year I’m delighted to be working with Max in some interesting ways in the Christmas story,” McGann said (via Facebook). “He’s a medical student — so as a GP, I’m keen to let him see a little bit more of the work I do. But it ends up being just a little bit more than we bargained for..!”

It’s also possible fans will get to see Lucille (Leonie Elliott) and Cyril (Zephryn Taitte) say “I do.” He proposed last season, and there were hints that the couple was planning a holiday wedding.

Megan Cusack joined the Call the Midwife cast in season 10 as pupil midwife Nancy Corrigan. She said filming her first Christmas special for the show was a delight.

“It was my first Christmas Special! I’m just obsessed with seeing fake snow,” she said (via Facebook). “Last year I got to do fake rain. This year I got to do fake snow, and I find that very exciting! Obviously Christmas is pure family time and Nancy has little Colette with her. So that was lovely. Francesca [Fullilove], who plays Colette, was baffled by the fake snow, but we still had a great time!”

When does ‘Call the Midwife’ Season 11 air?

After the Christmas special, fans won’t have to wait very long to see more Call the Midwife. Season 11 of the long-running series premieres March 20, 2022, on PBS. Plus, the BBC has already renewed Call the Midwife for seasons 12 and 13. That means the show will be on the air through 2024.

“It’s an incredible privilege to be able to look back on a decade of Call The Midwife, and yet know that our journey is still very far from over,” creator Heidi Thomas said in a statement when the renewal was announced. “We are thrilled to be going on for a few more years! Like Nonnatus House itself, we have a proud past but an even more exciting future – full of old favorites, fresh faces, higher hemlines, new ideas. The stories we tell are like babies – they never stop coming, we love them all, and we vow to do our best by every single one.”
