With all of the rumors and unique COVID-19 restrictions preceding this season of The Bachelorette, it’s no wonder fans are antsy and digging in deep to this season. Clare Crawley was off to a strong start last week. She set some men straight and she seemed to really know what she wanted. But after last night’s episode, one viewer insinuated Crawley lied about not going to prom. Crawley responded to that, but fans are divided on her.

Clare Crawley’s story about prom is coming into question because of old photos

On Episode 2, which premiered on Oct. 20, Crawley had a quarantined group date. It was much different than what viewers have seen in the past, but it seemed to work. Especially for her and Dale Moss, a frontrunner for her affections.

While she was privately talking to Chasen Nick, she told a story about how she “didn’t have the greatest high school experience.” She shared that she didn’t feel seen, and no one really knew her. She also said she “never went to prom” because no one asked.

However, the Instagram user Jami Merchant, @boymommerch, shared photos of her husband with Crawley in high school.

“My husband took @clarecrawley to senior prom, @clarecrawley you went to prom,” she wrote in the caption.

Crawley responded on Instagram and some fans have her back

The user tagged Crawley and it gained a bit of traction. And The Bachelorette responded.

“lol actually not. You do know there is more dances in high school that are NOT Prom?” Crawley wrote. “Turns out it’s just someone digging up old photos. (why she keeps her husbands old dance pics I’m not sure🥴) I went to a new school senior year and in fact DID NOT go to prom just like i said.”

On Reddit, fans wrote that the user clarified that the pictures were from an old scrapbook her mother-in-law put together, but regardless. Nick Viall, who was the Bachelor on the 21st season in 2017, tweeted, “If you can erase an Engagement erasing a prom date is a breeze. It’s fine.” This was in response to Maria Ciuffo of Chicks in the Office, who tweeted that she was “sick of Clare’s bullsh*t” when someone else tweeted out the old high school pics.

There were fans on Reddit that came to her defense though. One user wrote, “The woman accused her of lying when she didn’t even know the full story, my petty *ss would have commented something similar as Clare.”

Another fan touched on the part where Crawley said she switched schools, writing, “Ooof changing schools senior year had to suckkkk. Makes sense that she didn’t go to prom that year. I’m glad she commented and CLARIFIED the situation.”

But others still don’t like the narrative, regardless of what dance Crawley went to

Still, a good chunk of viewers on the Reddit post shared that it was the principle of the story rather than if she actually went to prom or not.

“Maybe she didn’t go to her senior prom but I think that using the ‘loser in high school I didn’t go to any dances’ trope is overused and inauthentic,” one user wrote

Another pointed out that Crawley doesn’t seem to be an obvious “loner” and so the story was a bit far-fetched.

“I don’t know why people are acting like the distinction matters. Clare told a story to make it seem like she was an unpopular loner in hs and this woman is calling her on that bs,” they wrote.

And Ciuffo followed up on Oct. 21 with a tweet about Crawley’s update.

“Clare’s response… prom or no prom it’s definitely NOT weird to keep old photos?” she wrote, focusing on the second part of Crawley’s comment. “Also Clare is saving dresses from years ago and burning them on live TV so what’s the harm of saving some HS pics.”

With the tension already high this season for audiences due to the knowledge that Crawley will “blow up The Bachelorette,” the criticism probably won’t go away. But it’ll be interesting to see what next week brings.
