As is custom with Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness made sure to set up its characters’ futures. And during one Doctor Strange 2 post-credits scene, Charlize Theron appeared to tease what’s to come for Doctor Strange.

Charlize Theron appeared in the first ‘Doctor Strange 2’ post-credits scene

At the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Stephen Strange develops a third eye, likely from using the Darkhold to dream-walk. This consequence seemingly ends the movie on a cliffhanger, but, thankfully, fans get more information in the first post-credits scene. Unfortunately, the extra sequence also poses more questions.

After the first set of credits scroll, Stephen is seen walking down the street when a woman approaches him. She informs him that he “caused an incursion,” and they’re “going to fix it.” The woman then tears a hole into the Dark Dimension. She looks back at Stephen and says, “Unless you’re afraid.” Unaffected by this new development, Stephen reveals his third eye and replies, “Not in the least.”

So in the time between the final scene of the Doctor Strange sequel and its first post-credits scene, Stephen has grown accustomed to his third eye. And he’s so comfortable with it that he reveals his third eye to this mysterious woman, played by Charlize Theron in Doctor Strange 2. When this woman confronts him, Stephen barely bats an eye, so who is she?

Who is Clea?

Thanks to the end-credits, we know that Charlize Theron plays Clea in Doctor Strange 2. And in the Marvel comic books, Clea plays a very important role in Doctor Strange’s story.

Clea, also known as Doctor Clea Strange, is a sorceress from the Dark Dimension. She is notably Dormammu’s niece, the daughter of Umar, Stephen Strange’s wife, and the ruler of the Dark Dimension. Clea, at one point, also succeeds Stephen as the Sorceror Supreme.

In the comic books, Clea first observed Stephen from the Dark Dimension, where she was a captive of her mother and uncle. Stephen and the Ancient One later saved Clea, and Stephen trained her. Their relationship eventually grew romantic, and they married.

Now that Stephen and Christine Palmer are seemingly over in the MCU, perhaps Doctor Strange 2 introduced Charlize Theron as Clea to be his next love interest. But there’s no doubt that her power will also make her a valuable ally to Stephen after his experience with the Darkhold.

Will Charlize Theron appear in the MCU following ‘Doctor Strange 2’?

It’s unclear if Charlize Theron will continue playing Clea in the MCU after appearing in the Doctor Strange 2 post-credits scene. However, we know that Doctor Strange will return, likely in a third solo movie. So it stands to reason that Clea could play a significant part in the unconfirmed third Doctor Strange film.

On May 6, Theron posted a picture of herself in a purple dress on Twitter. The actor’s caption read, “Cat’s out of the bag.” Clea’s signature outfit in the comics is purple, so Theron referred to her appearance in the Doctor Strange sequel.

Fans will just have to wait to find out if Theron’s Clea will play a bigger role in a future MCU movie. But the odds look good for her Marvel future.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters.
