Downton Abbey might have been a phenomenon that no one saw coming. But that doesn’t change the fact that the British historical drama – which follows the aristocratic Crawley family – became a runaway hit in the early 2010s. Originally airing on ITV in the UK, Downton Abbey made its way to PBS in North America as part of its Masterpiece Classic anthology. But where can longtime fans find the new movie, Downton Abbey: A New Era, online in 2022?

‘Downton Abbey’ first hit theaters in 2019

Downton Abbey ran for six seasons from 2010 to 2015. But just because the show ended doesn’t mean creator Julian Fellowes was ready to leave his fan-favorite characters alone. Rather, he wrote and produced a big-screen continuation of the series. Many original cast members – including Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, and Maggie Smith – reunited for the project. Michael Engler returned to the helm after directing the series finale.

And the first Downton Abbey movie seemingly lost none of the momentum of the show that inspired it. According to Box Office Mojo, the movie earned $192 million worldwide against a reported production budget of just $13 million. Needless to say, talk of a sequel circulated soon thereafter. Downton Abbey: A New Era finally released in UK theaters in April 2022.

When can fans stream the sequel online?

Moviegoers in the UK have been able to see Downton Abbey: A New Era on the big screen since April 29, 2022. But fans in the United States had to wait a bit longer until its May 20, 2022 theatrical release date. But what about those fans who want to watch the latest installment of the Crawley family’s story play out in the comfort of their own homes?

Unfortunately, Downton Abbey: A New Era will not receive a simultaneous streaming debut alongside its theatrical release. However, as reported by Deadline, NBCUniversal – the company behind Focus Features, which distributed both Downton Abbey films – is putting new film releases on Peacock 45 days after their theatrical debut. So fans need only wait until July 4, 2022 to stream Downton Abbey: A New Era at home.

A third ‘Downton Abbey’ movie might happen

At this early stage, there’s no telling whether Downton Abbey: A New Era will repeat the box office success of its predecessor. But if it does, Fellowes has already expressed interest in getting the gang back together for a third film.

“Well, I wouldn’t tell you if I knew [about a third movie],” Fellowes told Variety. “It’s the audience that tells you that.” With actors like Phyllis Logan and Kevin Doyle in support of Downton Abbey 3, it appears only time – and box office receipts – will tell if it actually comes together.
