Elliot Page Says ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Cast Didn’t Know About Season 2’s Big Twist

Fans of The Umbrella Academy were hoping for updates about season 3 during Netflix’s TUDUM event on Sept. 25, and who can blame them? After the show’s second season twist, viewers are eager to know what becomes of the Hargreeves family. Unfortunately, the virtual event didn’t shed much light on what to expect from the new episodes. However, it did see the cast of The Umbrella Academy sharing some fun, behind-the-scenes tidbits — and Elliot Page offering up a surprising admission about season 2’s ending.

The Umbrella Academy Season 2 ends with the Hargreeves siblings successfully preventing the end of the world, but their triumph comes with a catch. When the group returns to their timeline, they discover they’ve altered it significantly. Not only are Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) and Ben (Justin H. Min) still alive, but they’ve created a new team of heroes called the Sparrow Academy.

The finale concludes with that revelation, so it doesn’t reveal who makes up the Sparrow Academy or how they’ll get along with the Umbrella Academy. It’s probably safe to assume the two teams will clash, at least initially. And from the looks of it, Ben doesn’t remember his former siblings — begging the question of what the main characters’ pasts look like in this new reality.

Elliot Page says the cast didn’t know about the big twist

Viewers were obviously surprised when The Umbrella Academy Season 2’s unexpected ending shook things up for the Hargreeves siblings. Apparently, it wasn’t just viewers who got a shock from the twist. According to Elliot Page, even the cast of The Umbrella Academy wasn’t aware of what was coming.

During Netflix’s TUDUM event, the main cast of The Umbrella Academy answered some of fans’ “burning questions.” And although they didn’t offer much insight into when viewers can expect season 3, they did share interesting details about season 2. During their clips, Page admitted that The Umbrella Academy‘s big twist surprised the cast just as much as it did fans.

“We didn’t know all the details,” Page explained. “So the surprise about Ben at the end was a surprise for us.”

That’s something Min has spoken about previously as well, telling E! News that he didn’t know his character would be brought back to life.

According to Tom Hopper, who plays Luther on the show, the twist wasn’t the only “confusing” aspect of filming the finale either.

“None of the actors that had been cast as Sparrows this year were actually cast yet,” he explained. “So there were just silhouettes.”

So, now that the cast and fans are all on the same page about the Sparrow Academy, what does their introduction mean for The Umbrella Academy Season 3?

It’s hard to guess exactly what introducing this new timeline will mean for the show’s main characters. However, they’re likely to present the Hargreeves siblings with all-new obstacles. While the group spent most of the series preventing the end of the world and working out their differences, they’re bound to struggle with new conflicts in the upcoming season.

Fans will know more about their challenges when the new episodes finally arrive. Unfortunately, Netflix hasn’t announced a release date for The Umbrella Academy Season 3 just yet. In the meantime, the first two seasons are available to stream on Netflix.
