George Harrison’s son felt his father wanted to mimic some of The Beatles’ songs

All Things Must Pass was the first famous album George released after the breakup of The Beatles. It has some similarities to the music of The Beatles’ folk period. During an interview with Guitar World, Dhani said his father may have wanted to capture the sound of certain Beatles songs in All Things Must Pass.

“Dad had obviously built up so many songs after The Beatles,” Dhani says. “They didn’t get their day in court, you know? So he went big. Paul and John had already had their big arrangements with things like ‘A Day in the Life,’ ‘I Am the Walrus,’ and ‘Penny Lane.’ I think Dad wanted that kind of treatment and attention for his own songs.”

This song made Dhani and Olivia Harrison cry

Dhani had a strong reaction to one of the songs from All Things Must Pass: “I’d Have You Anytime.”

“We played it to my mum and she cried,” Dhani revealed to Guitar World. “Paul Hicks played it to me and I cried.”

Dhani explained why “I’d Have You Anytime” moved him. “You could hear the fragility in the voice,” he said. “It’s like a tarp has been lifted off the voice. It sounds so vulnerable, and yet so wonderful.”

Dhani explained how he remastered “I’d Have You Anytime” for the new version of All Things Must Pass. “I A/B-ed with the original a million times,” Dhani recalled. “The new mix has something that the original didn’t. I felt if a mix could move me like that, it’s definitely going in the right direction.”

The way the world reacted to George Harrison’s ‘All Things Must Pass’

George never released “I’d Have You Anytime” as a single, so it did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Regardless, All Things Must Pass became a massive hit. All Things Must Pass spent 41 weeks on the Billboard 200. It stayed on the top of the chart for seven of those weeks. All Things Must Pass was tied with The Concert for Bangladesh as George’s album that spent the longest time on the chart.

The Official Charts Company reports “I’d Have You Anytime” did not chart in the United Kingdom either. Meanwhile, All Things Must Pass spent eight weeks at No. 1 and 32 total weeks on the U.K. chart. None of George’s other albums lasted on the chart that long. “I’d Have You Anytime” wasn’t a hit but appeared on a best-selling album.
