Game of Thrones was one of the biggest TV shows of all time. The series, which ran on HBO from 2011 through 2019, changed the way that many viewers enjoyed television, introducing unforgettable characters and stunning locations.

While Game of Thrones went off the air in 2019 amidst a flurry of controversy, showrunners announced that spinoff shows would be coming in short order. Recently, HBO made good on that promise, releasing an exciting announcement about the premiere date for the brand-new Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon

What is the premiere date for ‘House of the Dragon’?

House of the Dragon was first rumored in 2019, with HBO showrunners revealing that they were in pre-production for a Game of Thrones prequel series. House of the Dragon is based on George R. R. Martin’s 2018 novel Fire & Blood, and will focus on events roughly three hundred years before the events detailed in Game of Thrones

Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait too much longer to enjoy the new fantasy series. HBO recently announced that House of the Dragon will be premiering on HBO Max on August 21, 2022. According to TV Guide, the show will feature the “mad kings” often referenced in Game of Thrones. The first season of House of the Dragon will consist of 10 episodes, with a new episode airing weekly.

Who will be starring in ‘House of the Dragon’?

Much like Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is set to feature a star-studded cast. Paddy Considine will be playing King Viserys I Targaryen, the fifth king of the Seven Kingdoms and the ancestor of Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen. Matt Smith will be portraying Prince Daemon Targaryen, the heir apparent to the Iron Throne, while Emma D’Arcy is set to play Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Rounding out the cast is Olivia Cooke, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, and Rhys Ifans. Since House of the Dragon will be taking place hundreds of years before Game of Thrones, it is unlikely that any recognizable characters will be making cameo appearances in the series – but it is very possible that showrunners could work in some sort of clever reference to characters or situations from the beloved HBO show. What fans can expect to see in House of the Dragon are more of the fantasy creatures that viewers loved in Game of Thrones – dragons.

As George R. R. Martin revealed in a late 2021 interview, he’s especially excited for House of the Dragon primarily because the show will be featuring even more dragons. “I’ve always thought this was a cool story, it’s one I like, so I’m looking forward to seeing it come alive on screen,” Martin noted. “And of course I’m looking forward to the dragons! Obviously, I love the dragons. We had three of them in Game of Thrones, but now we’ve got like 17 of them.”

Showrunners haven’t confirmed how many dragons will be in House of the Dragon, or even if the creatures will show up at all in the first season of the show. The teaser trailer didn’t include any dragons in it, so it’s very possible that the show is holding out in order to build up interest.

Still, Martin claims that the new series will be a feast for the eyes for anyone who loved Game of Thrones, noting that there’s a lot of “pretty cool” stuff in the upcoming show that fans will greatly enjoy. Viewers can catch House of the Dragon when it debuts on HBO Max in August 2022.
