Johnny Gilbert just turned 92

On July 13, 2020, Gilbert celebrated his 92nd birthday. His work tool, his voice, sounds as strong as ever.

Fans on Reddit sent the announcer their well-wishes.

“It is incredible that Johnny has done it all this time,” said one fan. “He is truly an inspiration for all of us.”

Another redditor wrote, “That booming voice still holding up at his age is even more impressive.”

“I knew he was up there,” said a fan on Reddit, “but I didn’t realize he was that old.”

And another follower of the show expressed on Reddit their concern for both Gilbert and Trebek.

“We’re all so worried about what happens when Alex dies,” the fan wrote, “and who will replace him, but we’ve forgotten about how we’re going to feel when Johnny goes. Along with the Final Jeopardy music, him saying ‘This. Is. Jeopardy!’ has become equally as iconic. Happy Birthday Johnny.”

Johnny Gilbert’s ‘Jeopardy!’ legacy

Johnny Gilbert is to Jeopardy! as public-address announcer Bob Sheppard
was to Yankee Stadium – immediately identifiable as the voice of a highly respected institution. The Virginia-born Gilbert took over as announcer on the quiz show in 1984, after his predecessor, Don Pardo, left the program.

It’s not just the show’s fans who recognize Gilbert’s talent; the Guinness Book of World Records acknowledged the voice-over professional in 2017 as the longest-running game show announcer on the same show.

Gilbert said at the time, “I am incredibly honored that my work on Jeopardy! has been recognized with a Guinness World Record. For more than 30 years, I’ve looked forward to coming to work every day. Jeopardy!‘s producers, crew, and contestants make every episode new and exciting and I love being a part of it.”
