Jaden Smith has become an international superstar thanks to his music, fashion, and movies. And his famous parents have certainly helped catapult him to fame. While Jaden doesn’t participate in Hollywood filmmaking as much as he used to, he had plenty of iconic roles in his childhood.

Back when Jaden was a pre-teen, he talked about what it was like having his first on-screen kiss. And it seems the ordeal was extra awkward because his dad, Will Smith, was watching.

The young Smith got his Hollywood start by starring in The Pursuit of Happyness alongside his father in 2006. And in 2010, Jaden had the chance to star in a remake of The Karate Kid. Jaden got to star in the film alongside Jackie Chan, and Will and Jada Pinkett Smith were the producers.

Jaden’s role in The Karate Kid was certainly challenging. Jada talked about how she and Will were “warring” over Jaden when he participated in the film, as she had to watch her son go through grueling training.

“I remember being on set with Will and it was such a struggle between he and I in regards to Jaden,” Jada said on Red Table Talk. “And I understand why men take their sons away for like whatever kind of warrior training, because it is completely, utterly, unfair and unnatural for a woman to have to sit and watch anything like that for her son.”

Despite Jada’s reservations, Jaden persevered through the training and completed the film.

Jaden said the kiss in the film was awkward because his dad, Will Smith, watched

The Karate Kid was also the venue for Jaden’s first kiss. Unfortunately, it wasn’t just the director watching the kiss. Because Will and Jada were involved in the film’s production, it seems Will was also present for the kiss.

When an Entertainment Tonight interviewer asked Jaden if his parents were “there for the kiss,” Jaden said, “they were.”

“We had security keep my mom in the tent so that she wouldn’t come out acting crazy,” Jaden continued. “My mom stayed in the tent, and my dad was on the set. But yeah, that was very awkward. One of the most awkward things I’ve ever done in my 11 years of being on this planet.”

Jaden then went into further detail about the kiss. He explained that he had to keep his face just inches from his co-stars face while on the set. “That was the awkwardest feeling,” he added. And Jaden noted he had to repeat the scene “32 and a half” times.

Will gave Jaden advice about dating later in life

While Jaden was embarrassed by his father witnessing his first kiss, it seems that was just the beginning. Jaden shared the advice Will later gave him about dating when he was just 15 years old.

“He didn’t say you can’t date,” Jaden said while on The Graham Norton Show. “He said, hey, I’m just gonna give you a word of advice, buddy to another buddy, you don’t want a girlfriend right now. You have a big movie coming out. It’s really gonna complicate your life a lot.”

Jaden continued on with the conversation by explaining that girls still managed to “complicate” his life, and he wanted to focus on his creative work instead of dating.

It seems Jaden might be wise beyond his years. And it also looks like he’s been able to forget about that awkward (and frequently discussed) first kiss he had back when he was 11.
