The heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe can’t fight together forever, and, sometimes, they need to step aside to make way for other characters. That’s why most superheroes only get three solo movies in the MCU before their time runs out — Thor: Love and Thunder is the exception. But it looks like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the end of the road for the Guardians.

James Gunn gives update on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

During an interview on Deadline’s Hero Nation Podcast, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn confirmed that the third film would be the final team-up between this specific group of superheroes.

“This is the end for us, the last time people will see this team of Guardians,” the director said. “It’s big; it’s so, so big and dark, and different from what people might be expecting it to be … I just want to be true to the characters, the story and give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story. That’s always a little bit scary; I’m doing my best.”

Gunn added, “I’m aware that the third film in most trilogies sucks; not always.”

While the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films deal with dark subjects, they are also shrouded in light and comedy. Hopefully, that will remain the same for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, Gunn’s comments make fans wonder what the third movie will look like exactly. And his statement does make it sound like there might be a new group of Guardians in the MCU in the future.

Fans should be worried about the Guardians in the third movie

Since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the final team-up between Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, Rocket, Nebula, and Mantis, it’s safe to say that a character or two might die in the film. And anyone who has seen The Suicide Squad knows that James Gunn is not afraid to kill off fan-favorite characters.

Per ComicBook.com, Gunn confirmed during an Instagram Q&A that someone would die in the third movie. Of course, this might mean a random character will perish. But the director has been teasing death in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for a while now.

Fans will just have to wait for the film to premiere in theaters to see if their suspicions are true, though.

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the firing and rehiring of James Gunn, the third Guardians of the Galaxy film has gone through many setbacks. But Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 finally began filming on Nov. 8, 2021.

The release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently May 5, 2023.
