Jessica Walter was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1941. Raised by parents who had their own artistic leanings, Walter got started in acting at a very early age, eventually attending New York City’s High School of Performing Arts. She started her acting career on the stage, appearing in productions like Photo Finish. By the mid-’60s, Walter had begun acting in television roles, including in shows such as Naked City, Route 66, and The Defenders.

In 1971, Walter rose to worldwide prominence after she appeared in the movie Play Misty For Me, opposite Clint Eastwood. Her work in the psychological thriller earned her a Golden Globe nomination and paved the way to a variety of juicy movie parts. Walter proved that she had the ability to play any role, appearing in everything from the television series Columbo to Amy Prentiss. Walter received an overwhelming amount of critical acclaim for her acting, including a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress – Comedy Series in 2005. Jessica Walter died on March 24th, at the age of 80, USA Today reports. The cause of her death was not revealed when the news of her death broke the following day, but her daughter, Brooke Bowman, made a statement that read in part “it is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of my beloved mom Jessica. A working actor for over six decades, her greatest pleasure was bringing joy to others through her storytelling both on-screen and off.”

Not only did Walter leave behind a rich legacy of television and film characters, but the veteran performer built a fabulous fortune as well.
