Jill Duggar is proving to be one of the most rebellious in the family. According to her husband, Derick Dillard, she’s on the outs with the rest of her family. And she’s even making decisions for her kids that differ from what her parents and siblings are doing.

Jill and Derick ultimately decided to send their son, Israel, to public school despite Jill’s homeschooled background. But she’s now explaining that she actually did consider homeschooling Israel prior to this decision.

Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard sent their son, Israel, to public kindergarten

Derick grew up going to public school, but this was new territory for Jill. After the couple weighed their options, they decided the best course of action for their family was to send Israel to public school. And they announced it on Instagram for all of their fans.

“Happy first day of school for these two!” Jill captioned her post of Israel and Derick, as Derick was also starting his last year of law school. “1st day of Kindergarten for Israel and 1st day of last year of law school for Derick!”

After Israel’s first day, Jill posted a video of how it all went down to YouTube. And she encountered a few surprises she never would’ve anticipated, like the long pick-up car line at the end of the day.

“Hey guys, so, I was homeschooled. And I had no idea that these lines would take so long,” Jill explained in her video.

Despite a few hiccups and unexpected moments, it’s clear Jill is excited to have her son get a public education.

Israel seems to be thriving in school

Given what fans saw from Israel’s first day of school, it seems like he loved it. And Jill and Derick created another home Q&A video for their YouTube channel on Sept. 16 to further explain Israel’s experience in the public school system.

“So far Israel is loving school, at least based on what he tells us when he comes home from school,” Derick told the camera. “We get all the updates. He was even ‘king’ for a day recently. Loves it, loves it, loves it. Making lots of good friends.”

Jill verified that this is true. “It’s working out pretty good,” she added. “He’s getting used to it.” She then added that kindergartens don’t realize that the current coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions are any different than the usual. “He doesn’t even have a ‘normal,’ so. … He’s loving playing and making new friends.”

While Jill and Derick ultimately decided that public school was the way to go for their family, it wasn’t an easy decision. They explained during their Q&A video that they researched all of their options first, and homeschooling was certainly on the table.

“We were both open to both options,” Derick explained in terms of public school versus homeschooling.

“We just talked about it and prayed about it,” Jill added. “We felt like this was the right timing for us. We moved right next to a really good school and in a good community, so I think it just made sense for us right now.”

Derick then added that every family is different and should do “what they feel is best.”

“We didn’t take it lightly,” Jill noted again. “We don’t want to take our child’s education lightly. … Lots of prayer and consideration. Not making decisions out of fear, but just informed.”

It looks like Derick is also getting involved in Israel’s school. He tweeted that he joined the parent-teacher organization.

We’re glad Jill and Derick are happy with their decision to send their kids to public school. Now, we’ll have to wait and see if any other Duggars follow suit.
