They say when one door closes, another one opens. That’s certainly been the case for Keanu Reeves. The actor missed out on joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe because of John Wick. While Reeves might end up in the MCU someday, he’s catching up with old friends in his current franchise. Here’s why Reeves needs to bring Carrie-Anne Moss into John Wick.

Keanu Reeves is signed on for at least two more ‘John Wick’ movies

When the Reeves-led John Wick was released in 2014, fans didn’t know quite what to make of it. By and large, the actor hadn’t landed a mainstream hit in roughly a decade. And with action classics like Point Break, Speed, and The Matrix under his belt, the bar was set high. Remarkably, John Wick became one of the biggest sleeper hits of the year. A franchise was born.

Reeves returned to play the former assassin drawn back into a world of violence twice more. The actor starred in sequels in 2017 and 2019, with each film nearly doubling the previous one at the box office. Since John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, Lionsgate locked Reeves down for at least two more installments in the franchise. As of now, John Wick has no plans to slow down.

The actor is also returning as Neo in 2021’s ‘The Matrix 4’

But John Wick isn’t the only franchise Reeves is coming back to. By the time he leads John Wick: Chapter 4 in 2022, the actor will have revived his two other popular franchises. In 2020, he reunited with Alex Winter for Bill and Ted Face the Music. And in 2021, Reeves will plug right back into The Matrix. Lana Wachowski — co-director of the original trilogy — helms alone this time around.

In The Matrix 4, Reeves is joined by several returning stars, such as Jada Pinkett Smith, Lambert Wilson, and Daniel Bernhardt. But while Moss is (somehow) back as Trinity, the most noticeable absence in the new film’s cast is Laurence Fishburne. The actor has since popped up opposite Reeves in the John Wick series, playing the Bowery King.

Why ‘John Wick: Chapter 3’ set up a major ‘Matrix’ reunion

Fans were tickled when Fishburne popped up in John Wick: Chapter 2. But since he won’t be joining Reeves and Moss in The Matrix 4, the John Wick series is the next logical place for this trio to share the screen once more. Moreover, the third film set the franchise up perfectly for Reeves and Fishburne’s characters to form a shaky alliance. Who better to join up as third wheel than Trinity herself?

Few would deny Reeves was the perfect choice for The Matrix, even if he was far from top of the casting list. But what really made the Wachowskis’ original movie sing was the chemistry between the three leads. Moss has the physicality to bring a ton to the comic book-inspired criminal underground of John Wick. So here’s hoping she, Fishburne, and Reeves all blast their way through an action extravaganza one last time.
