Keanu Reeves went from playing teen roles to some of the biggest action characters in existence. However, they each have a distinctive flair to them that makes them unique. In addition, their combat abilities are vastly different. Reeves once explained how he believes a fight would turn out between The Matrix‘s Neo and John Wick‘s title character.

Reeves first introduced the world to Neo in 1999’s The Matrix. The character was originally born under the name Thomas A. Anderson but folks later call him “The One.” The name is an anagram for the name “Neo,” which places him as the chosen one. The world sees him as a savior to bring peace, giving him a superhero-like aesthetic.

Reeves brought John Wick to the silver screen in the 2014 original. Sequels and a television spinoff further launched the character into the mainstream. He’s a legendary hitman who seeks revenge after a home invasion ends in the death of his puppy. However, the John Wick franchise continues to escalate the scale and scope with each new installment.

AskMen interviewed Reeves regarding his various action characters. Naturally, Neo and John were instantly a part of the conversation. Critics and audiences highly regard both Neo and John in Reeves’ career. The actor thought about the question for a moment, understanding that the fight is a bit uneven. However, Reeves feels that a fight would go in an entirely different direction.

“Neo’s got magic powers,” Reeves said. “Well, first of all, I don’t think they’d fight. Yeah … yeah, they’d go out for noodles or something. You know, they’d get some ramen, and then if someone came and then started some trouble between them, I, that would be bad.”

Reeves continued: “No, Neo would probably be like, ‘John, man, what are you doing? It’s OK, man. I can handle this. We don’t have to hurt anybody.’ And Wick would just be, ‘ … step aside.’ Yeah, Neo … he’s like more of a philosopher. John Wick’s more old school.”

‘John Wick’ and ‘The Matrix’ have different franchise trajectories

Reeves’ John and Neo have different paths. John Wick is still expanding its universe, as John Wick 4 is set to hit theaters on March 24, 2023. The film’s 2022 release date was pushed as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, John Wick 5 is also still set to release further down the line.

Meanwhile, The Matrix Resurrections just hit theaters in Dec. 2021. Producer James McTeigue explained that there aren’t any more Matrix sequels in the works. That isn’t to say that Warner Bros. doesn’t want to continue pursuing this world. However, the current team isn’t looking at expanding this universe any further.
