In the late 1980s/early 1990s, a new generation of actors rose to stardom. Keanu Reeves and Leonardo DiCaprio were among the future A-listers who got their big breaks in that period. Despite their decade of age difference, Reeves’ first mainstream hit released in 1989, whereas DiCaprio landed his first Oscar nom just a few years later. But which of the two actors is better?

Keanu Reeves is currently juggling three movie franchises right now

Hollywood is currently focused on franchise filmmaking. And that seems to be exactly where Reeves shines. One of his earliest hits, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, spawned two sequels, an animated series, and assorted media. And every decade or so, Reeves tends to add another movie series to his to-do list. A decade after the first Bill and Ted, he starred in The Matrix.

Then, 15 years later, Reeves led a revenge-driven action-thriller named John Wick. That 2014 movie, of course, launched him into a whole new era of success. Reeves also appeared in hits such as Point Break, Speed, The Devil’s Advocate, Something’s Gotta Give, Constantine, and Toy Story 4. Plus, there’s his underrated dramatic work in River’s Edge and My Own Private Idaho.

Leonardo DiCaprio is the Oscar-winning star of ‘Titanic’

While Reeves has his hand in numerous popular franchises, DiCaprio took the opposite approach. Following early breakouts What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and Romeo + Juliet, the actor found himself in one of the biggest movies of all time, Titanic. And since then, he’s focused more on cultivating collaborations with some of Hollywood’s most respected filmmakers.

Most notably, DiCaprio has worked with Martin Scorsese several times since 2002’s Gangs of New York, including Oscar winners The Departed and The Aviator. But he’s also delivered acclaimed turns in box office hits such as Inception, Django Unchained, Catch Me If You Can, and The Wolf of Wall Street. In 2016, DiCaprio won his long-awaited first Academy Award as Best Actor for The Revenant.

Is Keanu Reeves or Leonardo DiCaprio the better actor?

Stacking Reeves and DiCaprio against each other, it’s clear who the better actor of the two is. While Reeves can be quite good in the right role, DiCaprio has proven time and again just how much range he has. Whether this is a skill he naturally has or one he’s gained through working with one legendary filmmaker after another, it’s undeniable one he has at this point.

Even at the box office, DiCaprio easily bests Reeves, according to The-Numbers.com. Thanks in large part to Titanic, his movies has earned $7.2 billion worldwide. Comparatively, Reeves’ $5.8 billion — even with The Matrix trilogy and Toy Story 4 on his side — doesn’t come close. Both actors have their respective fans, but the Oscar-winning DiCaprio takes the win this time.
