Kevin McGarry Teases More Drama Between Nathan and Lucas in a Future Episode of ‘When Calls the Heart’

This season of When Calls the Heart has been all about Nathan vs. Lucas. Both men are fighting to win the heart of Elizabeth, which has naturally led to tension between them. Until now, they’ve mostly kept things civil, preferring to avoid each other rather than argue. But that changed in the April 11 episode of the Hallmark Channel series, when the pair exchanged some heated words about the woman they both love. And we may see things escalate even more in the near future, according to actor Kevin McGarry, who plays Nathan.

Nathan and Lucas (Chris McNally) have been rivals almost since the moment each arrived in Hope Valley. Both have fallen in love with the widowed teacher Elizabeth (Erin Krakow). For a long time, she seemed unsure of which man she preferred, but in recent episodes, she’s shown a clear preference for Lucas.

Nathan, however, isn’t out of the picture. While Elizabeth and Lucas have been going on romantic dates and sharing slightly steamy moments in his office, Nathan has vowed not to give up fighting for the woman he loves — even though she rejected him earlier this season.

Unsurprisingly, Nathan’s persistence doesn’t sit well with Lucas. So far, the suave saloon owner has been willing to step back and let Elizabeth decide what’s best. But he can see she’s upset over the ongoing Nathan drama, and he’s less and less willing to hide it. When Nathan voiced his intentions regarding Elizabeth in “A Parade and a Charade,” Lucas gives him a warning.

“I just want to let you know I haven’t given up on Elizabeth just yet,” Nathan says.

“You can do whatever you want,” Lucas replies. “But you better make good and sure that you have Elizabeth’s, and Allie’s, best interests at heart. Not your own.”

Lucas called Nathan out in a big way in the most recent episode of When Calls the Heart. According to McGarry, there may be similar scenes to come.

“I call that the amuse bouche to what’s coming up with the two of them,” McGarry told TVInsider. “They have a pretty good scene coming up with the two of them. But this is a little taster of what’s to come.”

Nathan’s big revelation at the end of “A Parade and a Charade” will only ratchet up the tension between him and Lucas, once Lucas learns of it. In the episode’s final moments, the Mountie finally confessed to Elizabeth that he was originally supposed to lead the training mission that led to her husband Jack’s death. The news left Elizabeth reeling and raises the question of whether she’ll be able to come to terms with Nathans’s indirect role in Jack’s accident. It also puts Nathan’s feelings for Elizabeth in a new light, as his attraction to her appears to be tied up with the guilt he feel about Jack’s death.

“I think this is a big thing moving forward to see if she can forgive him,” McGarry said.

The next episode of When Calls the Heart, “Pre-Wedding Jitters,” airs Sunday, April 18 at 9 p.m. ET on Hallmark Channel.
