Candice King would love to appear in Legacies. In a recent interview, The Vampire Diaries alum confirmed her interest in appearing in the spinoff series. And if any original Vampire Diaries cast member were to have an arc on Legacies, Caroline Forbes would make the most sense. Here, we break down why.

Why isn’t Candice King in ‘Legacies’?

Caroline’s absence is Legacies is noticeable, as she’s the mother of two of the main characters, Josie and Lizzie Saltzman, and the founder of the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted.

Fans will recall Caroline was Josie and Lizzie’s surrogate in The Vampire Diaries. After Kai Parker killed the pregnant Jo Laughlin on her and Alaric Saltzman’s wedding day, the Gemini coven cast a spell switching the babies from Jo to Caroline to save them. Given Jo’s death, Caroline became their mother. She and Alaric were together for a bit before she got back together with Stefan Salvatore.

They got married in the second to last episode of The Vampire Diaries, but Stefan died in the series finale saving everyone from Hell fire. Caroline opened the school in Stefan’s honor and received a sizable donation to it from Klaus Mikaelson. His daughter, Hope Mikaelson, is the leading lady of Legacies and a student at the school.

The reason for Caroline’s absence came in season 1. Josie and Lizzie think their mom is away traveling as part of her work for the school. In reality, Caroline and Alaric are hiding a secret from their daughters. Caroline is away trying to find a solution to The Merge—a magical event that will force twins Josie and Lizzie to combine into one person. One of them will die in the process. It’s supposed to happen when they’re 22.

Will Caroline Forbes be in ‘Legacies’ Season 3?

Creator Julie Plec told CinemaBlend this is the only thing that could take Caroline away from her children.

“We don’t want Caroline to be an irresponsible mother,” she said. “She’s a great mother, and she’s always been a great mother to these girls, so if she’s not going to be there for this huge event in their lives, it damn well better be for a good reason. That was one of the reasons we wanted to introduce this secret that she and Ric are keeping from the girls.”

Plec made it clear that it’s not a matter of if Caroline will appear in Legacies, but when. Season 3 episode 8 of Legacies gave an update on Damon and Elena. That, plus some casting calls for in Georgia for future episodes of Legacies Season 3, has fans thinking Nina Dobrev could be appearing as Elena Gilbert soon.

Other Vampire Diaries cast members (Steven R. McQueen, Zach Roerig) have made cameos on the show as well. Caroline also appeared via voiceover in season 3 episode 3, giving viewers the closet thing to a Caroline cameo yet. It feels long past time for Caroline to finally make her debut.

Candice King appeared in ‘The Originals’ and wants to appear in ‘Legacies’

In an Instagram Live interview with Tommy DiDarrio in April, King said she’s ready whenever Plec and the Legacies team wants her back. Although, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic likely caused a delay in her cameo. She said:

Yes…I always just say yes. And obviously, COVID changed things and the way that things were filming, so those invitations might even be a little delayed, you know. But, uh, yes. Absolutely. Absolutely.

If you have doubts, just trust in the fact that King appeared in five episodes of the final season of The Originals. While fans were delighted to finally get a conclusion to her relationship with Klaus, they’re undoubtedly eager to see her reunited with her daughters on Legacies.
