Mare of Easttown started airing on HBO in April 2021, and right away, the show began earning critical acclaim. The series focuses on Mare Sheehan, a Philadelphia detective who is tasked with investigating the murder of a young mother.

In addition to Mare’s professional struggles, she has a difficult time balancing her personal life with the demands of her job. With many locals questioning Mare’s detective skills, after she was unable to solve a missing person case, Mare is more determined than ever to make a difference in her community.

Mare of Easttown was created especially for television by Brad Ingelsby, a talented screenwriter who has worked on projects like American Woman. Mare of Easttown is a labor of love for Ingelsby, with the writer recently admitting that he has been working on the production since 2018: “When we first started writing it in 2018, I was feeling like we were in a dark time in this country. I wanted to portray the need for compassion and mercy and to help each other with a certain level of kindness and decency.”

Kate Winslet plays the lead character Mare Sheehan

Mare of Easttown features some big-name stars, including the Winslet in the lead role of Mare Sheehan. Winslet has been in the entertainment industry since the early ’90s and first shot to fame after her starring role in the blockbuster film Titanic. Over the years, Winslet has shown that she isn’t willing to be typecast as any one character, and has gone out of her way to accept challenging roles.

Mare Sheehan is a character that is unlike any role that Winslet has ever taken on. Describing Mare, Winslet explained that the detective is not one to focus on her appearance, and that “she’s kind of stopped caring what people even think about her.” Rather, Mare is focused on her job first and is always willing to do what it takes to solve a case.
