Dale Sawyer is first introduced during NCIS Season 18, Episode 11 (titled “Gut Punch”). When he interacts with the team, he gives off a cocky and sometimes abrasive attitude. He clashes the most with Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama).

Nick is used to being the cool, good-looking team member, but he’s been replaced by Dale. He’s a little like Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), only rude and very annoying.

Dale questions Gibbs’ team

One thing Dale doesn’t understand is why Gibbs’ team didn’t face a harsher punishment for lying. After Gibbs beat up a suspect, they all said the man simply tripped and fell. Dale is angry about the way things were handled, so he confronts Bishop (Emily Wickersham) about it.

Bishop says she’s aware that she, McGee, and Nick did a poor job. She realizes they made a bad call when they covered for Gibbs. “Look Sawyer,” says Bishop. “We messed up and we know it. And we will face the consequences of our actions.”

Sawyer continues to grill Bishop. He won’t let her forget that she and her team just got a slap on the hand. There haven’t been any consequences,” says Sawyer. “Gibbs took it on the chin, but his disciples barely got a reprimand. Why?”

Nick tells Sawyer to go home, but his shift is just beginning. Much to the team’s surprise, Sawyer and Special Agent Veronica Tyler are now in charge of their cases.
