Peaky Blinders Season 6 is almost here, and fans are more excited than ever to see what becomes of Thomas Shelby. Director Anthony Byrne gave viewers a clue as to what the “first image” of the season will be.

[Spoiler alert: Spoilers ahead for Peaky Blinders Seasons 5 and 6.]

Does Tommy Shelby die? The end of ‘Peaky Blinders’ Season 5 left on a cliffhanger

So, does Tommy Shelby die at the end of season 5? And what becomes of him in Peaky Blinders Season 6? Fans of the show know Tommy deals with PTSD from his involvement in World War I, as it’s affected him since the first season. While the war has hardened Tommy in many ways, we’ve seen flashbacks of him digging through the tunnels and coming into contact with the enemy.

In season 5, we also saw Tommy interact with one of his friends from the war, Barney Thompson. Barney lives out his days in a mental institution, unable to escape the horrors he saw in the war as an expert sniper.

Tommy released Barney from the mental health facility to assist in the assassination of Oswald Mosley, a political leader with a particular interest in fascism. Tommy’s plan went awry, though, resulting in Barney’s death. At the end of the season, Tommy put a gun to his head and screamed as he talked to the ghost of his dead wife, Grace. As for whether Tommy pulled the trigger or not, it’s unclear — but it’s doubtful he died at that moment.

Director Anthony Byrne said this is how ‘Peaky Blinders’ Season 6 begins

So, what will become of Tommy in Peaky Blinders Season 6? According to Byrne, the new season will pick up right where season 5 left off. And Byrne shared with Digital Spy what fans will see as the first scene of season 6.

“Yeah, it picks up directly [from season 5],” Byrne shared. “The very first image you will see will be back in that field, with Tommy with a gun to his head, and then we will move on from there and resolve that amazing moment.”

It’s unclear what that resolution will look like. But we anticipate learning who betrayed Tommy just as the character learns whom he can no longer trust.

“You certainly find out,” Byrne noted. “But yeah, we actually cut stuff around that end section to make it more oblique.”

Season 6 will end with the beginning of World War II

Not only will we learn more about who sabotaged Tommy’s plan, but Peaky Blinders Season 6 will wrap up the time period between World War I and World War II by ending with a World War II scene. Creator Steven Knight shared he always knew how the series would end. And he plans to bring that scenario to life with season 6.

“I set off with a destination usually,” Knight told Express.co.uk. “The main destination is the end of the whole thing, which is the start of the Second World War. … “And I know what scene that is going to be, I know how it’s going to end.”

Byrne also told Digital Spy Knight created a beautiful sequence and shot it in a way he’s never quite done before. “There’s a very long sequence that’s quite like a Sergio Leone-style, slow-building sequence of a lot of moving parts, slowly merging and it’s pretty great,” Byrne added.

We look forward to learning more about Peaky Blinders Season 6 as it’s revealed.
