RuPaul’s Drag Race challenges require drag queens to show their personalities and talents to the best of their ability through a series of trials. The most recent seasons incorporate various twists and turns to keep it fresh, although the earlier seasons followed a more predictable format. RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5 contestant Alaska revealed that she stole from RuPaul herself in the perfume challenge.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5 Episode 8 is called “Scent of a Drag Queen.” The challenge calls for the queens to make a commercial for a signature fragrance inspired by their drag brand. This type of challenge is still used in more recent iterations of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Each queen records their perfume commercial and then walks the runway. The category is “company spokeswoman.” The guest judges include  Aubrey O’Day, and Joan Van Ark.

Alaska earned her first win of the season for the perfume challenge. Jinkx Monsoon and Detox placed high, receiving positive remarks from the judges. Roxxxy Andrews and Coco Montrese got low placements with a list of judge critiques. Meanwhile, Alyssa Edwards and Ivy Winters landed in the bottom two and had to lip-sync for their lives to “Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ on But the Rent” by Gwen Guthrie. Alyssa won the lip-sync, sending Ivy home.

Alaska stole from RuPaul in the perfume commercial challenge

Alaska opened up about her experience on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5 in her memoir titled My Name’s Yours, What’s Alaska?: A Memoir. Her book details her personal journey and experiences during her time on the popular show. Alaska recalled the “Scent of a Drag Queen” challenge, her perfume commercial, and RuPaul giving her the challenge win.

“I sometimes have a tendency to flat-out steal lines from other people,” Alaska wrote. “In the case of my perfume commercial, I stole directly from RuPaul herself. “R U ready, for me?” That was an old RuPaul saying from the Red Hot era. That might have been the reason why she liked my commercial so much.”
