Survivor Season 41 was a crazy ride from beginning to end. However, it was full of twists that not everyone was thrilled about. And, unfortunately, the preview for Survivor Season 42 makes it clear that some of those controversial new developments to the CBS reality competition series aren’t going away anytime soon.

'Survivor' Season 41 stars Deshawn Radden, Erika Casupanan, and Xander Hastings are informed that Erika won. Deshawn wears a blue shirt and blue shorts. Erika wears a blue shirt and pearl-studded headband. Xander wears a white patterned cardigan and white pants. The 'Survivor' Season 42 preview shows the same format as season 41.

‘Survivor’ Season 41 was a ‘new era’ of the game

The preview for Survivor Season 41 warned fans that this would diverge from the Survivor that they all know and love. And Jeff Probst even called the season a “new era” of the game. He loved to say, “Drop the four, keep the one,” regarding the season’s number.

When the season began, it was evident that what separated it from previous installments was its shortened number of days and the introduction of groundbreaking new twists.

The twists included “Shot in the Dark,” “Do or Die,” the hourglass, and more. Fans were OK with some of these new factors, but many felt they changed the game too much. And those who never warmed up to twists like the “Beware Advantage” aren’t happy that Survivor Season 42 is adopting some of the elements from season 41, according to the preview.

CBS releases the ‘Survivor’ Season 42 preview

During the Survivor Season 41 finale, CBS showed a preview for season 42 and introduced the new group of castaways. It will include 18 contestants, separated into three tribes. The trailer also reveals that the “Beware Advantage” is back in play. So there are three new strange phrases the castaways will have to say to unlock their idol. One of the phrases is, “Potatoes have skin. I have skin. Am I potato?”

Jeff Probst told Entertainment Weekly, “It was really exciting to birth the next era of Survivor with a new, dangerous, fast-paced game that completely caught the players off guard. For Survivor 42, we have another truly outstanding group of players ready to take on the greatest social experiment on television.”

The host added, “And perhaps the best twist of all is that we shot 41 and 42 back to back, which means this new group of players had not seen Survivor 41, so they have no idea what awaits them!”

Some fans aren’t happy that the preview for ‘Survivor’ Season 42 shows familiar twists

After seeing the Survivor Season 42 preview, fans expressed their disappointment that it will feature the same twists from season 41.

“I cannot overemphasize how much I loathe these hidden beware idols and their awful phrases,” a fan explained in a Reddit thread. “I couldn’t even watch every time they were being said at the beginning of challenges.”

In a different Reddit thread, fans expressed their hopes for future seasons. In doing so, many dinged Survivor for recycling the same twists in season 42.

One Reddit user said, “They already filmed 42. However, for 43, I would like less twists/advantages, replacing the Beware Advantage with hidden immunity idol, and for a slightly more controversial pick, they should bring back fire tokens.” Another fan added, “[I want] more focus on the characters and stories. Less time devoted to advantages and twists.”

Survivor Season 42 premieres on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
