What The Monkees’ Davy Jones wrote about Micky Dolenz in his autobiography

In his book They Made a Monkee Out of Me, Jones discussed The Monkees’ sitcom at length. He was initially dissatisfied with the casting of Dolenz, Mike Nesmith, and Peter Tork. Jones didn’t like that the other members of the band were so much taller than him. The actor and singer noticed his bandmates’ heights made The Monkees distinct from The Beatles, one of the Prefab Four’s primary influences. He was told the other members of the band were cast so they looked different from each other.

Later in the book, Jones reflected on Dolenz’s role on The Monkees. “If you ever saw Micky on The Monkees’ show he was playing himself,” Dolenz opined. “A tough role but somebody had to do it.”

Micky Dolenz compared The Monkees to siblings

According to the HuffPost, The Monkees had a reputation for not getting along, which Dolenz disputed.

“Well, it’s never quite that bad,” Dolenz said. “I’m not saying that we didn’t have our differences. But I don’t think ours were as bad as some of the other ones, the horror stories I’ve heard about. I don’t think we were even that bad when we were that bad!”

Dolenz compared The Monkees to siblings, saying, “You have problems — when you live and work and play and have the kind of experiences that we did over years … you know, I describe it as like having siblings.”

He continued, “If you have a sibling, you love him, you hate him, you have wonderful times, you have arguments, you have bad times. When you spend that much time and you’re that close, and it’s that intense, as families can be. You know, Davy was the closest thing I ever had to a brother.”

The way Davy Jones ended his autobiography

While Jones mildly criticized Dolenz in his book, he also praised him extensively. He said he respected Dolenz as both a person and as a musician. Jones was impressed when Dolenz started to open up to him about his personal life. The singer also said he and Dolenz got along well when they performed onstage.

The end of They Made a Monkee Out of Me features a picture of Jones and Dolenz at adjacent urinals, smiling at the camera. Jones said he wanted fans to remember the Prefab Four as the best of friends, joking together. While Dolenz and Jones didn’t always get along, they clearly mattered to each other.
