‘The Witcher’ Renewed for Season 3 on Netflix
The Witcher Season 2 doesn’t arrive until Dec. 17, but Netflix has already renewed the Henry Cavill-led fantasy series for a third outing. During the streamer’s virtual TUDUM event on Sept. 25, Netflix revealed its plan to continue The Witcher with a season 3. It also announced several spinoffs set in the same universe, promising to bring fans much more Witcher content over the next few years.
Netflix announces ‘The Witcher’ Season 3 at TUDUM
Most fans of The Witcher went into Netflix’s TUDUM expecting more updates about season 2. After all, the new episodes are still several months away — leaving plenty of time for new trailers and clips to surface. And while the event did feature new footage of the upcoming season, it had a bigger surprise in store.
Despite showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich’s previous statement that The Witcher Season 3 would likely depend on the success of season 2, Netflix greenlit a third season ahead of the second season’s premiere date. While the event couldn’t delve into details about season 3, the renewal does prove Netflix wants to expand this world.
And that’s not the only proof Netflix is turning The Witcher into a full-fledged television franchise.
The world of ‘The Witcher’ is getting bigger
In addition to greenlighting The Witcher for season 3, Netflix also announced two other projects set in the same universe. Following The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, the streamer decided to move forward with another anime feature film. It didn’t offer details about what the anime spinoff will cover. However, if it’s anything like Nightmare of the Wolf, it’s likely to expand on the lore and setting featured in the original series.
The Witcher will also receive a family-friendly spinoff, something that’s difficult to envision given the adult nature of the show and video games. Clearly, Netflix is hoping to build a bigger audience with this addition to the universe.
These projects join prequel The Witcher: Blood Origin in the lineup of content coming to the platform. Before delving into season 3 or any of these new projects, however, fans have season 2 to look forward to.
When does ‘The Witcher’ Season 2 come out?
Before fans can start speculating about The Witcher Season 3 and future spinoffs, it’ll be helpful to know where season 2 leaves things for Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) and his companions. Season 1 saw Geralt and Ciri (Freya Allen) coming together at long last. The new episodes will show Geralt overseeing her Witcher training, with both of them journeying to Kaer Morhen. They’ll also see Geralt developing a familial bond with his new charge.
Of course, Ciri’s got a long way to go before becoming a Witcher as powerful as Geralt. In the meantime, she’ll still be in danger — something that’s likely to continue into season 3. At least fans know that December won’t mark the end of her journey.
