One of the top items on so many people’s list of New Year’s resolutions is this: Get organized. For so many of us, that means getting rid of stuff. Lots of homes are plagued by clutter – especially after the holiday season.

Luckily, Marie Kondo is here to help. The international phenomenon wrote the New York Times best-selling book, “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” and started a revolution of organizing. Thousands of people have latched on to Kondo’s unique method, which involves only keeping those items that “spark joy” and respectfully getting rid of everything else.

Who is Marie Kondo?

By now, most people have heard of Marie Kondo. The Japanese organization sensation first noticed her tendencies for tidying at the tender age of five, and by grade school, she was sneaking her parents’ items to school to discard them. She launched her home organizing business at 19 and quickly had more work than she could handle. One of her customers gave her the idea to write a book for everyone on her months-long waiting list

Now that Kondo is famous, she’s more in demand than ever. But despite her popularity, it is possible to “Kondo” your house with professional help.

What is the new show on Netflix?

There’s a new Netflix series called Tidying Up with Marie Kondo and it’s already receiving a whole lot of press. In it, Kondo herself assists families with tackling their cluttered spaces and dealing with the emotions that arise from letting go of precious mementos. Her unique method of handling clutter helps people process their stuff and fall in love with their homes again.

News outlets warn that you should get your tissues ready because the eight-episode series is full of heartbreaking moments. But ultimately, Kondo’s customers always find joy – and clean houses – in the end.

Can you hire Marie Kondo?

Even before she was famous, Marie Kondo had a waiting list of clients a mile long. Now her services are even more in demand than ever. But just because you most likely can’t get a personal visit from Marie Kondo, it doesn’t mean you’re stuck living a life filled with clutter.

KonMari consultants are officially certified and trained in using the KonMari method that Marie Kondo herself created. When reading the book and studying the methods aren’t enough to help you break bad habits and finally declutter all your stuff, then sending in a professional could be the answer to creating a calm, peaceful environment in your home.

Currently, there are more than 200 KonMari certified consultants worldwide and more being added every day. There are different levels of certification – a certified green consultant has conducted at least 10 tidying sessions with two clients while the highest level (other than Kondo herself, of course) conducted at least 500 tidying sessions with 50 clients.

How much does it cost to hire a consultant?

KonMari consultants create their own rates, so it will vary depending on where you live and what level of organizing they’ve achieved. As an example, one platinum status KonMari organizer charges $100 per hour for a minimum of five hours plus $50 worth of travel time outside of New York City. But the person you choose could be more or less expensive than she is.

How can you become a KonMari consultant?

Becoming a KonMari consultant takes a lot of research and practice. The first thing you must do is read the book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” Next, you’ll need to apply the KonMari method to your own home and submit photographic proof that you’ve done it. Finally, you’ll need to attend a training seminar and learn how you can help others with their tidying. The cost to attend the seminar is around $2,000, but when it comes to making money helping clients, the sky’s the limit.

Go ahead — tidy up!
