TL; DR:

  • Netflix has renewed Top Boy for season 3.
  • The upcoming season will be the show’s last.
  • Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date, but filming will begin in summer 2022, star Ashley Walters says.

Good news for Top Boy fans. The gritty British crime drama will return for season 3 on Netflix, the streaming service confirmed on March 31. Unfortunately, the upcoming season will be the last for the show.

Netflix confirms ‘Top Boy’ Season 3 is happening.

Top Boy Season 2 dropped on Netflix on Friday, March 18. The new season picked up after the dramatic season 1 finale, with most key cast members returning. That included Ashley Walters as Dushane and Kane Robinson as Sully. The show focuses on the lives of a group of drug dealers on the fictional Summerhouse Estate in East London.

The Netflix series is actually an extension of the original Top Boy. That show premiered in 2011 on U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 and aired for two seasons before it was canceled in 2013. Those seasons were rebranded as Top Boy: Summerhouse after Netflix revived the show in 2019.

Filming for the new season of ‘Top Boy’ starts in summer 2022

Netflix hasn’t revealed a premiere date for Top Boy Season 3. But fans are undoubtedly hoping that the gap between seasons won’t be as long as the one between seasons 1 and 2, which stretched over two years because of pandemic-related production delays.

Filming for the new episodes should begin in the summer of 2022, Walters tweeted. That news was confirmed in a message from the show’s official Twitter account.

The Top Boy revival – which came about thanks to an intervention from Drake – has proved popular with Netflix viewers. People watched more than 30 million hours of season 2 from March 27 through March 27, according to the streaming service. That made it the most-watched Netflix show after the first two seasons of Bridgerton and Is It Cake?

Ashley Walters and Kane Robinson say ‘Top Boy’ Season 3 will bring the show ‘full circle’

Walters and Robinson have commented on the Top Boy renewal news and why the show is ending.

“For those that have followed the journey from the start, you will know how much this show means to everyone on our team and we wholeheartedly know how much it means to you,” the pair said in a statement (via Digital Spy). “These characters have been a part of our lives for over a decade now and without everyone’s support we couldn’t have come this far.”

However, “every story must have an ending,” they said. “So season 3 will be our finale. A chance to come full circle and end the journey in the right way.”

Top Boy Season 2 is currently streaming on Netflix.
