Andrew Garfield stars in ‘Under the Banner of Heaven’

Under the Banner of Heaven is a Hulu true crime drama miniseries that consists of six episodes. Andrew Garfield will play the lead role in the show — Detective Jeb Pyre. Jeb is a detective who investigates the deaths of Brenda Wright Lafferty, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, and her baby daughter.

The miniseries is based on Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by Jon Krakauer, a book that detailed the real-life deaths of Brenda and her daughter, Erica.

Not only does the show delve into true crime, but it also interweaves how the murders involve The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In Under the Banner of Heaven, Andrew Garfield’s character is a Mormon, as is the entire community in which the murders occur.

Andrew Garfield expresses his enthusiasm for true crime and ‘Under the Banner of Heaven’

During an interview with Extra, Under the Banner of Heaven star Andrew Garfield admitted how excited he was for the project.

The reporter said, “Andrew, you were not a very tough sell on this series because you’re a big fan of the book.” Garfield responded, “You calling me easy? Yeah, I’m a slut for true crime.” And the actor’s co-star, Gil Birmingham, added, “I can attest to that.”

Garfield continued, “No, but I earn easy. I am an easy sell for true crime, and particularly … I’ve loved this book since it came out over 10 years ago and like everyone else would read it in our industry. I was like, ‘We should turn this into a thing … a movie or a TV show.’ I was a kid. I didn’t know how to do it.”

“But Dustin Lance Black is a Mormon, an ex-Mormon himself, and we figured out a way over 10 years to turn it into a miniseries with some great producers,” the actor shared. “And yeah, it was easy for me to say yes.”

It sounds like Andrew Garfield is just as obsessed with true crime as the rest of the world.
