Who will Birmingham play on ‘Under the Banner of Heaven’?

Birmingham will play Bill Taba in Under the Banner of Heaven, though little is known about the role so far.

Birmingham currently plays Chief of the Broken Rock Reservation, Thomas Rainwater, on the hit series Yellowstone, a character he tells Town & Country is his dream role due to the character’s ill-defined morals. “[Yellowstone] seems to be filled with what might be described as antiheroes, but they’re just a multi-dimensional characters that are all flawed, which is true to the essence of being a human being,” Birmingham says. “I’ve been asked before, ‘what would your perfect character be that you’re going to portray?’ I think Thomas Rainwater is it at this point.”

Known for roles that reflect his Native-American heritage, Birmingham has also been seen in 2016’s Hell or High Water and 2017’s Wind River, and is also currently starring with Toni Collette in this year’s Pieces of Her, however, Birmingham’s role on Yellowstone is undoubtedly what he is best known for after the Yellowstone season 4 finale saw a staggering 9.3 million viewers.

What is ‘Under the Banner of Heaven’ about?

Based on the New York Times bestseller, Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer, the series tells the story of a devout Mormon detective whose faith is tested when he investigates a case in connection with the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The true-crime story follows the murder of a young Mormon wife and her infant daughter in 1984, and is set in a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah. The series’ focus, however, will likely be on the effect the investigation has on Detective Jeb Pyre, a devout Mormon himself.

Oscar-nominated actor Andrew Garfield will play Under the Banner of Heaven’s lead role, Detective Jeb Pyre, described by What to Watch as an “LDS elder who is committed to his Church and family but begins to question some of the Church’s teachings through his contact with a suspected murderer.”

Garfield was most recently nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role at the Academy Awards for his portrayal of playwright Jonathan Larson in tick, tick… Boom! and is best known for his role as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man. He will star opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones who is also playing the lead role in this year’s highly-anticipated screen adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing.

Other stars include Sam Worthington as Ron Lafferty and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Wyatt Russel as Dan Lafferty. The Peacemaker’s Christopher Heyerdahl, Adelaide Clemens (Rectify), Rory Culkin (Waco), and Chloe Pirrie (The Queen’s Gambit) will also appear in the limited series making for an outstanding cast, but the series’ big names don’t stop there.

Variety reports that Under the Banner of Heaven is created by Dustin Lance Black (Milk, Big Love, and J. Edgar) and has Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Jason Bateman among others listed as executive producers.

As a veritable magnet for stars, Under the Banner of Heaven, will surely be a huge hit for Hulu, beginning April 28.
