It’s a summer of mystery on PBS. The fourth season of the British series Unforgotten premieres in July. Once again, detectives Cassie Stuart and Sunny Khan find themselves trying to crack a decades-old case and achieve a measure of justice for the victim. Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming season.

Unforgotten Season 4 premieres Sunday, July 11 at 9 p.m. ET on PBS. Like previous seasons, the show’s fourth outing will consist of six hour-long episodes. All episodes aired earlier this year on ITV in the U.K.
This time around, DCI Stuart (Nicola Walker) and DI Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) are on the case after a dismembered body is discovered in a scrap metal yard. Evidence suggests the remains have been hidden in a freezer for the past 30 years.
A distinctive tattoo helps the team identify the victim, a young man who vanished in 1990. Clues suggest that he might have been the victim of a drunk driving accident, but the driver has recently died. However, four passengers who were also in the car, and they soon become the focus of the investigation.
As Cassie works to uncover the truth, she’s dealing with some difficult personal issues. She is ready to retire, but bureaucratic hurdles make that impossible. She’s also facing challenges with her son, who’s moved back home, and her father, who is in the early stages of dementia.
‘Unforgotten’ cast: Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar return
Both Walker and Bhaskar will be back as Cassie and Sunny for Unforgotten Season 4. Several new faces are also joining the cast, including Susan Lynch as Liz Baildon; Liz White as Fiona Grayson; Phaldut Sharma as Ram Sidhu; and Andy Nyam as Dean Barton.
Liz, Fiona, Ram, and Dean are the four main murder suspects this season. All four are in their late 40s and have built successful lives since the night of the accident. Now, the police investigation has the potential to destroy the reputations and relationships they’ve spent decades building.
Cassie is ‘angry’ at the beginning of this season, Nicola Walker says
At the end of Unforgotten Season 3, Cassie was at the end of her rope, and it seemed likely she’d step away from the police force for good. But when season 4 opens, we learn that hasn’t happened. Although Cassie intended to retire, she discovers she’ll lose a significant amount of her pension if she does not continue working. As a result, she feels she has no choice but to go back to work, especially because she needs all the money she can get to pay for her ailing father’s healthcare.
“It is awful, she is in a complete trap,” Walker explained in a statement to ITV. “Her entire career she has very dedicatedly given to the police force. She is angry and feels very betrayed and that’s how she goes into this [season’s] story.”
As for Sunny, this new investigation sounds like it could be a bit more personal for him than in the past.
“What is different about this series is that the investigation leads them much closer to home and it affects the way they investigate this case because the ramifications are much bigger,” Bhaskar told ITV.
