What will Unforgotten look like without Cassie? And how will Sunny and the rest of the team move on after the death of their beloved boss? Those questions are top of mind for fans of the British mystery series, which airs on PBS in the U.S. Recently, series star Sanjeev Bhaskar shed some light on what fans can expect when the show returns for its fifth season

In the Unforgotten Season 4 finale, detective Cassie Stuart (Nicola Walker) succumbed to injuries she suffered in a car crash in the previous episode. Her death was a devastating blow to her family and her colleagues, especially detective Sunny Khan (Bhaskar).

Cassie’s character was an integral part of Unforgotten, but her death doesn’t mean the show is canceled. U.K. broadcaster ITV is moving forward with a fifth season without Walker.

Bhaskar recently spoke to Radio Times and shed some light on what the show will look like without Cassie, though he was not able to reveal specific plot details.

“The story will pick up not long after the end of the last story,” he said. “So there is a connection to that story.”

He did admit that not having Walker around would take some getting used to.

“It’s very exciting reading the scripts, a bit weird not to see Nicola’s character there,” he said.

While details about Unforgotten Season 5 are scarce, we do know that a new detective will be joining the historical murders team as Sunny’s partner, and that the character will be female.

“I certainly have begun conceiving the character, yeah,” series creator Chris Lang told Radio Times in a May 2021 interview.

“I’ve kind of got a rough idea, obviously, who she is,” he added. “It’s an evolutionary process when you write both the series and the characters and they evolve over the course of the writing process, six months or so. So I have a pretty good idea who she was and who she is and what her story is. And yes, it’s a woman.”

Lang called Unforgotten Season 5 “a new iteration of the show.”

“[H]aving a new character alongside Sunny Khan will give it a different energy and you always need to be looking for that every single season,” he said.

‘Unforgotten’ Season 5 will be more ‘political’

Lang shared a few more details about what to expect from Unforgotten Season 5 in an interview with PBS.

“It’s the most political of the story so far, ‘political’ with a small ‘p.’ It really addresses where the UK is as a country politically,” he said.

Lang also revealed that he hadn’t “100% decided” whether Cassie’s family, who were important secondary characters in the show, would appear next season. He also said viewers would learn “a lot more” about Sunny’s girlfriend Sal (Michelle Bonnard).

“I’ve tried to find more room in this season for the personal lives of our two protagonists, and certainly his new partner,” Lang said. “There’s a big personal story.”
