Both Faith Carter and Nathan Grant faced heartbreak at the end of When Calls the Heart Season 8. Faith and Carson hit the pause button on their relationship when he decided to move to Baltimore for a prestigious surgical fellowship, while Nathan was crushed when Elizabeth let him know that she didn’t return his feeling for her. With both characters feeling a bit battered in the romance department, is there any chance they might end up finding solace in each other in the show’s ninth season, which premiered March 6 on Hallmark Channel? Andrea Brooks, who plays Faith, recently weighed in on the possibility.

Faith and Nathan had a moment in the ‘When Calls the Heart’ Season 8 finale

In season 8’s final episode, Faith (Andrea Brooks) said goodbye to Carson (Paul Greene). Meanwhile, Nathan (Kevin McGarry) realized that Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) was in love with Lucas (Chris McNally). The two characters bonded over their heartbreak in a moment toward the end of the episode.

As Faith bandages Nathan’s injured hand, he asks her how she’s doing since Carson left.

“Well, like any wound, it’ll take time to heal,” she says.

“I know,” Nathan replies.

The Faith-Nathan moment immediately got When Calls the Heart fans talking. Was it just a case of two friends supporting each other during a difficult time? Or was there a hint of a spark between the Mountie and Hope Valley’s resident doctor? For some viewers, it seemed that the show was setting up a potential romance between Nathan and Faith for season 9.

Andrea Brooks isn’t surprised how people interpreted the Nathan-Faith scene

Brooks wasn’t surprised that many fans suspected that Faith and Nathan’s season finale conversation might be the start of something more.

“I saw those conversations [online after the episode aired],” she said in Facebook Live chat (via YouTube) with the rest of the When Calls the Heart cast ahead of the season 9 premiere. “I remember when we were filming thinking that scene that people could potentially read into it.”

So, is there a spark between Faith and Nathan? For Brooks, that moment was more about two people being there for each other when they needed it.

“I actually think that was just a nice, tender-hearted scene between two people who’d gone through something quite similar,” she said. “They’re both mending broken hearts.”

Brooks wasn’t about to share any season 9 spoilers, so fans will just have to wait and see if Faith and Nathan’s friendship blossoms into something more. But she did say that there’s plenty of opportunity for storylines that bring the two characters together.

“They’re first responders. They always put others’ needs ahead of their own,” she said.

“They have a bit of a similar history [with their] emotions, their feelings, their hearts,” she added. “So yeah, there’s always potential.”

For now, it looks like fans will be seeing more Nathan and Faith scenes in When Calls the Heart’s March 13 episode. A teaser (via YouTube) shows Nathan in bed in the infirmary following his accident at the end of the season 9 premiere, which apparently has left him suffering from amnesia.

When Calls the Heart airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on Hallmark Channel.
