‘When Calls the Heart’ Season 9: Lucas Spends Time With Little Jack in New Teaser
Lucas and Little Jack will be spending some quality time together when When Calls the Heart Season 9 returns in 2022. A teaser for the upcoming episodes of the Hallmark Channel series features Elizabeth’s new love preparing to entertain her young son while she’s at work.
Lucas gives Little Jack a ‘thoughtful’ gift in ‘When Calls the Heart’ Season 9 clip
In the season 9 clip (via Hallmark Channel), Lucas – played by Chris McNally – visits Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) at her home. When he shows up, he’s sporting an impressive shiner, though he downplays his injury to Elizabeth. He tells her that he got the black eye by walking into a door, which she doesn’t believe.
Elizabeth is concerned, but Lucas is focused on Little Jack (newcomer Hyland Goodrich). He’ll be spending the day with Elizabeth’s son while she’s at school, and he presents the little boy with a new toy – a wooden boat.
“Just like the one your father had,” Lucas tells Elizabeth.
“Well, that is a very thoughtful gift,” she replies.
Some fans were worried that Lucas wasn’t showing enough interest in Jack
The season 9 clip will likely please When Calls the Heart fans who were worried that Lucas so far hasn’t spent much time with Elizabeth’s son. Those critics felt that the saloon owner’s apparent lack of interest in the boy meant he wasn’t a good match for the school teacher. Now, it seems that the two will be sharing more screen time next season.
McNally addressed his character’s lack of interactions with Little Jack in an appearance on his When Calls the Heart co-star Paul Greene’s The Grass Is Greener podcast in June 2021 (via YouTube). He explained that there were supposed to be some season 8 scenes featuring Lucas and Jack, but they didn’t make it into the final episodes.
“Lucas had scenes with baby Jack. They just got cut,” he shared. “They were there, they were written. But due to time, for whatever reason, they were gone.”
In a Facebook Live (via Heavy), When Calls the Heart showrunner John Tinker talked about one of those deleted scenes. He revealed that early in season 8, when Lucas returns to Hope Valley after having been away for some time, he gives Little Jack a gift of a toy dog, telling him “Every boy needs a dog.”
“I loved that scene, but we had to cut it,” he said.
Rosemary tells Elizabeth that Lucas will be a good father
In another season 9 sneak peek shared by Hallmark Channel, Elizabeth’s friend Rosemary (Pascale Hutton) tells her that she saw Lucas and Jack earlier that day.
“Lucas will make a wonderful father,” she reports. Elizabeth reacts with a shocked expression.
“Oh, don’t give me that look,” Rosemary says. “You obviously feel the same way.”
“Yes,” Elizabeth says. “But perhaps you could slow my trip down the aisle just a bit?”
When Calls the Heart Season 9 airs in 2022 on Hallmark Channel.
