Evelyn (Moore) runs a domestic abuse shelter to help those in need. However, she can’t seem to connect with her son, Ziggy (Wolfhard). She desperately tries to reach out and develop a connection, but the right words never quite come out, despite her good intentions. Evelyn begins to spend more time with a resident at her shelter who is a boy around Ziggy’s age named Kyle (Billy Bryk).

Meanwhile, Ziggy has a dream of making it rich and famous with his folk music career. He also desires some sort of connection with his family, but they aren’t very supportive of his dreams. He latches onto an intelligent girl at school named Lila (Alisha Boe) and tries to learn more about political and social action.

Julianne Moore was really impressed by Finn Wolfhard on the set

Moore and Wolfhard both took part in the Sundance Q&A following the world premiere of When You Finish Saving the World. They talked about the experience working on the set, particularly during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Moore detailed how impressed she was seeing Wolfhard at work.

“Finn is a spectacular actor,” Moore said. “I mean, he really is. That was one of the first things I said to Jesse [Eisenberg]. His energy is tremendous and it didn’t take any work at all. I mean, honestly, we just started working together and he’s so facile.”

Moore continued: “It’s rare that somebody his age has that much command and that much relaxation on screen. I was really thrilled by it. Just the fact that they have a lot of intellectual energy, these two. It needed to be evident in the way that we deliver the dialogue. Finn, he’s just so fast, he’s smart and so alive. He’s a great, great partner.”

Naturally, Wolfhard was caught off guard and called it one of the nicest things anybody has ever said about him.

‘When You Finish Saving the World’ sees Jesse Eisenberg go from actor to writer and director

When You Finish Saving the World marks The Social Network actor Jesse Eisenberg‘s directorial feature debut. He also wrote the screenplay. Some Sundance crowds criticized Eisenberg’s awkward sense of humor found throughout his movie. However, he doesn’t view Evelyn and Ziggy’s characters to be grating in the way that many others do.

A24 Films will release When You Finish Saving the World later this year, which audiences will want to see how Moore and Wolfhard deliver on their powerhouse performances.
