The Cook of Castamar has been one of the most successful shows on Netflix this year. Enthralling audiences with its rich period drama aesthetic and the magnetic performances of its lead cast, it catapulted itself to international recognition as one of the most-watched shows of the summer after hitting the streaming giant’s library. Because of how good it turned out to be, fans are already clamoring for more. So, will there be a second season, and when will it premiere?

‘The Cook of Castamar’ was a major hit on Netflix

The Cook of Castamar is a period drama set in 18th century Spain. It follows the forbidden romance between Diego, the Duke of Castamar, and Clara, a simple cook in his kitchen. Drawn together by deep personal tragedy and Clara’s exquisite food, the two develop a sordid affair that they must hide from everyone else in their lives. Between the secrecy, scheming, and strict social hierarchy that they live under, it’s an uphill battle for the lovers as they try to achieve their dreams and be together.

Season 1’s ending was a rollercoaster of emotion

A ton of things happened during the season 1 finale, so prepare for some major spoilers if you keep reading.

For starters, we get to see the bloody aftermath of Diego’s duel with Enrique, which would have claimed Diego’s life just like the Marquis of Soto if not for Clara intervening to take him back to the manor for medical help. Ultimately, he survives, but that’s not the end of his troubles.

Almost immediately after detailing all of Enrique’s crimes that led up to his death in their duel, Diego is contacted by the royal guard. Shockingly, however, he isn’t about to be put to death for killing Enrique, but is called on to tutor the King’s obnoxious son. In exchange for these services, Diego is given anything he could ask for, and what he asks for is that Clara’s father be pardoned and saved from execution.

After this, Diego and Clara must separate, as Diego’s marriage to Amelia. That is until Amelia reveals that she’s been pregnant with Enrique’s child the whole time, not Diego’s. With this news, the wedding is called off, and Diego leaves to become a tutor as intended.

Meanwhile, Clara’s book is published to immense success, though she still longs for Diego even after a six-month jump forward in time. Shockingly, he shows back up without anyone knowing, then reveals he’s forsaken his role as tutor and his royal title. Without any further barriers to their relationship, Diego and Clara decide to marry.

So far, there hasn’t been any word on a second season

8 Romantic Period Dramas to Stream on Netflix

Looper has confirmed there’s currently no news about whether or not The Cook of Castamar is going to get a second season. When or if there is, though, Netflix probably won’t be the place to look for updates immediately, given that the streaming service only distributes the series internationally. Unless they become involved in the production side of things at some point, the decision to renew the show for another season lies solely with its creators, Buendía Estudios, in Spain.

As for what might be in the second season, that’s anyone’s guess. The first season covered most of what’s in the original novel, meaning any additional seasons would need to take a page out of The Handmaid’s Tale and come up with their own ideas. That said, a few details here and there were omitted from page-to-screen, so it’s highly possible we might see some of them worked in when a potential season 2 starts up. Perhaps the biggest challenge, however, will be writing around the more or less definitive ending for the season, as everyone (more or less) seemed to live happily ever after when the show came to a close.
