Yellowstone has officially been renewed by the Paramount Network for season 5. And it will be a season like no other. How many episodes will there be? And, when will the new season of Yellowstone premiere? Here’s what we know so far.

‘Yellowstone’ season 5 will be super-sized

The first season of Yellowstone featured just nine episodes. But they kicked it up to 10 episodes each for seasons 2, 3, and 4. Season 5, however, will be super-sized and feature a whopping 14 episodes. But, there is a catch.

The new season will be divided into two halves, with seven episodes each. There is some confusion, though, about when part one will premiere.

When will part 1 of season 5 premiere?

According to the Wall Street Journal, part one of season 5 will premiere “this summer” and then part two will air later “in the fall.” But that contradicts what executive producer David Glasser has said previously about Yellowstone season 5.

Glasser told Variety that filming begins in May, and he claimed that the new season would start airing “in the fall.”  Local Montana newspaper Ravalli Republic reported that “current plans call for pre-production work to begin in mid to late March, with filming to get underway May 15 and run through the middle of August.”

It is possible that they will air the first seven episodes while filming part two of the season. However, this would be a huge change from Yellowstone’s past filming and broadcast schedules.

The Paramount Network is accelerating all things ‘Yellowstone’

It looks like the report that Yellowstone season 5 will premiere part one this summer could be true because Paramount is apparently accelerating all things Yellowstone.

The network wants to leverage the success of the flagship series while it’s hot. And, they want to use it to bring viewers to Paramount+ by introducing two of Taylor Sheridan’s new series during Yellowstone season 5.

“We want to double down on that momentum and not waste it,” Chris McCarthy, chief executive of ViacomCBS Media Networks and MTV Entertainment studios said.

Part 1 will introduce ‘The Tulsa King’

Sheridan’s deal with Paramount keeps expanding, and he now has nine series in total. The new plan is to use part one of Yellowstone season 5 as a launching pad for The Tulsa King starring Sylvester Stallone.

The Tulsa King is not part of the Yellowstone universe, but it is part of the Sheridan-verse. Just like they did with 1883 and Mayor of Kingstown last year, the first two episodes of The Tulsa King will air after Yellowstone on the Paramount Network. Then, the series will move exclusively to Paramount+. The goal of using this hybrid linear TV/streaming schedule is to bring new viewers to the streamer.

‘Yellowstone’ season 5 part 2 will introduce a new prequel ‘1932’

Paramount will employ the same strategy with part two of Yellowstone season 5 when they introduce the new prequel 1932. It will tell the story of another generation of Duttons, this time during the time of the Great Depression and prohibition.

This means, though, that Sheridan only has about 10 months to get 1932 on the air — and it’s still in the script outline stage. It doesn’t look like the series has been cast yet, and there’s no filming schedule to speak of.

But Sheridan does have a history of putting a prequel on the air quickly. For 1883, the process of idea/pilot script to season 1 premiere was only seven months.

Season 1 of 1883 is currently airing on Paramount+. Seasons 1 through 3 of Yellowstone are available on Peacock. Season 4 is expected to drop in the spring.
