A Timeline of Diddy’s Ever-Changing Prison Release Date
It’s nearly impossible to keep track of exactly what Sean “Diddy” Combs’ release date is now. The disgraced media mogul’s prison release has changed multiple times since he walked through the doors at FCI Fort Dix. This week, he was taken away from the federal facility for medical treatment; now he’s back in prison, and he’s got a fresh release date to show for it. Let’s take a look back at all the times the date has changed.
Diddy’s original release date was set at his sentencing hearing
Sean “Diddy” Combs spent more than a year behind bars before he was finally sentenced for two Mann Act violations. While he was acquitted on the most serious charges of racketeering and sex trafficking, the violations still carried a prison sentence.
Judge Arun Subramanian sentenced him to 50 months behind bars and a $500,000 fine in October 2025. His lawyers had asked for a lenient sentence of just 14 months, while prosecutors sought about 11 years. Diddy received credit for the 14 months he spent in a federal lockup in Brooklyn ahead of his trial. His initial projected release date was May 8, 2028.
The first pushback came a month after he arrived at FCI Fort Dix
It didn’t take long for Diddy to find trouble in federal prison; that trouble resulted in a change to his prison release date. Within weeks of arriving, he violated prison rules around the way phone calls worked and allegedly drank contraband alcohol.
The early transgressions moved his release date back about a month. After the scuffle with the rules, Diddy was accepted into the facility’s drug abuse treatment program. The program can help inmates shorten their sentence, and initially Diddy was taking full advantage of that.
Diddy earned good-conduct credits
While Diddy’s initial troubles led to an additional month on his sentence, he received credit for good behavior once he settled into life inside the facility. This spring, his prison release date was moved up to April, shaving nearly two months off the sentence. Despite the moved-up date, Diddy continued to appeal his conviction and sentencing.
The good behavior apparently didn’t last too long. In July, he was moved to solitary confinement after a fight with another inmate. The trouble didn’t have an adverse effect on his release date as expected, though. By this summer, his release date was moved up to February 2028, the biggest change he has experienced since being processed into the prison system. His release was moved up once again on Sept. 29, with a projected release date of Jan. 21, 2028.
Trouble has pushed back his release date again
While Sean “Diddy” Combs appeared to be making forward progress while behind bars, something changed this week. According to recent reports, Diddy found himself in a world of trouble after NBC News reported that the disgraced mogul was allegedly enjoying a rather lavish lifestyle behind the prison fences. Talks of a hired staff, a contraband phone, and extra perks took the internet by storm.
After the reports surfaced, Diddy was moved back to solitary confinement, according to People. While the BOP does not comment on individual inmate situations, reports have surfaced that Diddy was taken from Fort Dix to a medical facility in the overnight hours. He has since been returned to his federal lockup, but his release date has not stayed the same. His projected release date is now March 2, 2028, pushed back from January.
Is it unusual for a prison release date to change?
Federal release dates aren’t fixed. They can move earlier when inmates earn good-conduct credit or complete programs like drug treatment, and move later when inmates lose credit for disciplinary infractions. That’s why Combs’ date has bounced in both directions.
While Diddy’s date seems to have changed more than most, it’s likely more complicated than that. All eyes are on his prison release date, so minor changes, which might be completely routine, feel monumental. His release date is probably subject to change again before he finally sees the outside world in 2028.
