Tory Lanez is a little busy recovering from an attempt on his life inside the California Correctional Institution. The rapper was stabbed 14 times and suffered a collapsed lung in a still-unexplained prison melee. While he’s hospitalized, his lawyers are working double time, utilizing the press around the stabbing to proclaim their client’s innocence. His legal team now claims to have evidence that would exonerate Lanez and bust him out of the jail where he was shanked. Megan Thee Stallion’s lawyer has responded to the oddly-timed claim.

Why is Tory Lanez in Jail?

Tory Lanez, born Daystar Peterson, is serving 10 years behind bars for charges stemming from the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. The shooting occurred after a fight broke out at a party in December 2020. According to several sources, Megan got out of an SUV after a party at Kylie Jenner’s home during an argument with Lanez. It is then that the prosecution claims Lanez fired a gun at Megan’s feet. A witness claimed they saw two women fighting before shots were fired. Megan Thee Stallion testified that Lanez told her to “dance” before he discharged the weapon.

Lanez was convicted in December 2022. The case was heard in Los Angeles, with a jury finding him guilty on three felony counts. The charges included carrying an unregistered firearm, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and gross negligence. A judge sentenced him months later.

Tory Lanez’s lawyer says there is new evidence to exonerate him

Tory Lanez’s medical troubles have evidently bolstered his lawyer’s efforts to get him out of jail. Days after the rapper was stabbed inside a supermax California prison, his legal team has stepped forward to claim there is new evidence that proves he didn’t shoot at Megan Thee Stallion.

According to TMZ, a bodyguard who worked for Kelsey Harris now claims Harris admitted to firing the shots at her former friend during the altercation. According to the bodyguard who reportedly just stepped forward, Harris also said Lanez grabbed her arm to stop the shooting.

Lanez’s team didn’t stop there, though. They allege Lanez’s stabbing was no ordinary prison brawl. They believe that Lanez was stabbed because they disclosed the new evidence. His team feels a conspiracy is at play. While several members of his team spoke out, no one explained why Lanez never suggested that Harris pulled the trigger or why he took “full responsibility” for the incident.

Megan Thee Stallion’s lawyer responds

Megan Thee Stallion, Lanez’s victim, has remained largely quiet since reports of his stabbing hit the media. She hasn’t commented on it and seems to have happily moved on from her situationship with Lanez. Her legal team did issue a statement, though.

XXL Magazine caught up with Megan’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, who made it clear they have no interest in rehashing Lanez’s story. He told the publication, “Tory was tried and convicted by a jury of his peers and his case was properly adjudicated through the court system. This is not a political matter — this is a violent assault that was resolved in the court of law.”
