Social media doesn’t tell the whole story. 

Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife of eight years, Cherelle Griner, People reported Friday. The couple, who met when they were both students at Baylor University, share a two-year-old son, Bash. Cherelle, who is an attorney, was a key advocate for her wife when the WNBA star was imprisoned in Russia in 2022. 

Brittney filed for divorce on July 30 in Fulton County, Georgia. She listed her and Cherelle’s date of separation as July 24. In her filming, she described the marriage as “irretrievably broken.”

The divorce filing comes as a major shock to those who follow the couple online. Just days before taking action to end her marriage – and after the date of their separation – Brittney was sharing videos on Instagram and YouTube of herself happily spending time with her family.

“Divorce?? Wtffff,” one person commented on the Insta post. 

“Divorce!? tell me the blogs a lie,” another wrote. 

This will be divorce no. 2 for the Connecticut Sun player. In 2015, she split from fellow WNBA Glory Johnson after a brief marriage. The couple tied the knot in May 2015, despite a high-profile domestic violence incident the previous month. In June, Johnson revealed she was expecting twins via IVF. Griner filed for an annulment one day later. A judge denied the annulment request and the couple later divorced. Johnson welcomed twins in October 2015.
