Carmelo Anthony Gets Real About How He and La La Made Co-Parenting Work for Their Son and If He’ll Ever Get Married Again
La La and Carmelo Anthony were once a major power couple in sports and entertainment.
They first met in 2003 when they were introduced by DJ Clue. At the time, La La was a rising media personality working as an MTV VJ, while Carmelo was gaining national attention as a standout college basketball player at Syracuse University before entering the NBA. The two began dating and got engaged on Christmas Day 2004.
In 2007, they welcomed their son, Kiyan Carmelo Anthony. Three years later, Carmelo and LaLa tied the knot in a high-profile wedding ceremony in New York City, attended by many celebrities and athletes. Much of the planning, preparations, and the ceremony were featured on the reality TV series La La’s Full Court Wedding.
In April 2017, La La and Melo separated. La La officially filed for divorce in June 2021 after 11 years of marriage. However, something they managed to do is maintain a good relationship when it comes to co-parenting their son.
Carmelo opens up about successful co-parenting with La La
Carmelo was a guest on a recent episode of Today‘s Glass Half Full with Craig Melvin and shared that it takes work but he and his ex-wife have always shown up for their son.
“It can still work. You know, it’s still an effort. It’s still, you know, participation,” Carmel said, explaining that he and La La prioritize Kiyan. “It’s still communication. You still have to talk. You still got to raise a young man. So, you know, you still have to have those kind of lines of communication open when it comes to just doing what’s best for the kid.”
He added, “And I would say communicating for sure. And sometimes that could be easier said than done. You know, communicating is easier said than done, but it has to be a full-on effort from both sides.”
Kiyan currently plays for Syracuse, which is the same university Melo attended and won an NCAA title in 2003. La La and Carmelo have been spotted at games together cheering on their son.
Will Melo ever get married again?
When it comes to whether he would ever walk down the aisle again, Carmelo told Melvin, “I don’t know, man. I don’t know. I’ve done it, man. I’ve tried it 16 years. Like, it’s, I’ve done it at the highest level. I’m not against it. I support it, you know. I’m all for it. And I love to see people, you know, kind of go through that ceremony.
“I support it. I just, you know, mean it like I’m not, if somebody comes to me saying, hey, man, should I do this? I’m like, hell yeah, do it. Like, it’s fun. It’s like, you know, enjoy it. But from my experience, would I want to go through that again? I don’t know. I don’t know at this point in time that I have the, I would say, the real estate to actually commit to that and deal with that.”
