‘Chicago Fire’ Season 15 Premiere: Did [Spoiler] Die?
The Firehouse 51 team is dealing with the aftermath of a devastating warehouse fire in the Chicago Fire Season 15 premiere.
Season 14 of the NBC first responder drama ended with the entire crew rushing to the scene of a massive blaze. Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), Vasquez (Brandon Larracuente), Herrmann (David Eigenberg), and Ballard (Leroy S. Williams) tackled the roof, while Severide (Taylor Kinney), Cruz (Joe Miñoso), Mouch (Christian Stolte), and others headed inside. But in the episode’s final moments, a massive ball of fire engulfed the building. The roof team, who were beginning to evacuate, were making their way down the ladder, while the group inside sent out a frantic mayday call, saying they were trapped inside. Then the episode ended, leaving the entire team’s fate up in the air.

Cruz suffers a devastating injury on ‘Chicago Fire’
Chicago Fire Season 15 opens in the middle of the action. The scene is chaotic. But the firefighters who were on the roof are safe. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for those inside. They’ve been trapped by falling debris. Severide and Cruz are trying to make their way out when they hear people calling for help. Cruz goes to investigate, eventually breaking through a cinderblock wall to get them out. Hermann arrives to assist, and Cruz sends him out with one of the victims while he stays behind to rescue someone who is unconscious. Suddenly, the wall collapses on top of Cruz.
“New Blood” then jumps ahead in time. We see an emotional Hermman lingering outside the scene of the fire. Meanwhile, Cruz’s pregnant wife (they’re expecting twins) hugs one of her husband’s shirts to her chest as she folds laundry. We also see Mouch leaving the neuro-spinal institute at the hospital.
Finally, Cruz’s fate is revealed. He survived the fire, but things are not good. The accident has left him partially paralyzed and doctors aren’t sure if he’ll be able to walk again.
An investigation raises questions about Cruz’s actions during the fire
Cruz’s injuries have devasted both him and the rest of the 51 crew. But somehow, things get worse. Jacob, a reporter for the Chicago Telegraph is looking into the warehouse fire, and he has some questions for 51’s new chief, Severide. Two people died in the fire, and he wants to find out why CFD seems to be stonewalling the investigation.
Severide doesn’t take kindly to the reporter’s presence and orders him out of the firehouse. But Jacob leaves behind a list of questions, which make it clear that he is trying to figure out if someone on the team was responsible for the structure collapse. Cruz immediately senses that he could be blamed. “They think I killed those people,” he tells Severide.
If the official investigation finds Cruz responsible, he could lose his job and his pension. Severide wants to investigate, but as Kidd points out, that makes it look like he’s interfering, putting his own career at risk.
But Severide is undeterred. He revisits the warehouse while on a video call with Cruz, walking through what happened that day. Unfortunately, evidence seems to report that Cruz’s actions might have caused the collapse. The official investigation’s findings are the same, and a leaked version of the report recommends Cruz’s firing.
Yet once Severide gets a look at the report, he realizes there’s been a mistake. The architectural plans that were used during the investigation weren’t correct. Revised plans prove that burn pattern on the building’s beams support the theory that Cruz’s actions didn’t cause the collapse. However, Severide can’t take his finding directly to the board. So he has Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) – now working in Phoenix – share the information.
Cruz is cleared of wrongdoing, but for him, it’s a hollow victory. He’s received his MRI results, and the prognosis is grim. Even if he is eventually able to walk, his life will be changed forever.
“I’m never going to be a firefighter again,” he tells Herrman in the episode’s final scene.
What’s next for Cruz and his family? A return to 51 seems impossible. And we know that Miñoso is leaving the show. The actor is set to appear in just a handful of episodes this season to wrap up his character’s storyline, meaning we should soon get answers about how Cruz will move forward following his life-altering accident.
Chicago Fire airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Episodes stream the next day on Peacock.
