In 2011, director Penelope Spheeris worked with Jennifer Aniston on the set of Five. When filming wrapped, Spheeris received an anonymous present. She opened it in front of the crew and found a rhinestone dildo inside. Spheeris said that the gift embarrassed her, and she believes Aniston gave it to her for this reason.

A director was not happy with a gift from Jennifer Aniston

Spheeris and Aniston both directed short films as part of the anthology Five, which is about the impact of breast cancer. At the end of the shoot, Spheeris received a present.

“At the end of the shoot, the assistant director comes over and says, ‘Have a seat in the chair,’” she said on The Moynihan Report podcast. “I sit down, and the whole crew gathers around. Her producer walks up with a gift box.”

Someone “gave [her] a dildo” with “rhinestones pasted on it” that “you couldn’t even use.”

“There [was] a f***ing dildo in there in front of the whole crew,” she said. “I’m supposed to open up a dildo?”

She believes that the gift was a “mean-spirited” attempt to “humiliate” her. She also thinks that it “had to” have come from Aniston.

“When we got nominated for a Directors Guild Award [in 2012], she comes in with the same kind of gift box in her hand,” she explained. “She comes over, and I go, ‘What’s in there? Another dildo?’ And she goes, ‘No, it’s a present for [producer] Marta Kauffman.’”

To Spheeris, the box was the smoking gun.

“But it was the same box,” she said. “The same gift box. Those were Jennifer Aniston’s gift boxes.”

She joked that she felt Aniston might sue her for telling the story.
